TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY (2001 MODELS)
Model(s): All Mitsubishi 2001 models
Group: Body
Bulletin No.: TSB 00-42A-010
Date: December, 2000
PURPOSE
The RKE system must be properly identified in order to service the system or program the transmitter. This bulletin contains basic service information for RKE systems on 2000 models.
Identify the system before attempting repairs. System operation, component location, and transmitter programming are different for each system. For detailed information on troubleshooting factory-installed RKE systems, refer to Group 42 in the appropriate service manual or contact Tech Line. See Fig 1 .
Refer to the appropriate Section Title in this bulletin for RKE service information
SECTIONS:
- DENSO RKE & OMRON/DENSO-Copy RKE System
- OMRON RKE System
- CodeAlarm RKE Only System
- CodeAlarm RKE with Security System
- RKE Service Parts
DENSO RKE (2001 ECLIPSE, GALANT) & OMRON/DENSO-COPY RKE (2001 MONTERO) (FACTORY-INSTALLED - SEE GROUP 42 IN SERVICE MANUAL)
SYSTEM OPERATION:
The system will operate if doors are open or closed. Push the UNLOCK button once to unlock the driver's door. Unlocking will cause the dome light to illuminate for 15 seconds and the hazard lights to flash. Push the UNLOCK button again to unlock the passenger doors. Push the LOCK button to lock all doors; the dome light and hazard lights will flash twice to confirm locking operation. If the system locks or unlocks the doors, the answer back functions (which are new for 2000) cause the hazard lights to flash and the horn to sound. To disable or modify the answer back function(s), refer to TSB-00-42A-004 or Group 42 in the service manual.
If a door is not opened within 30 seconds of unlocking, the system will relock the doors. If the vehicle is equipped with the factory alarm system, the remote transmitter will also have a PANIC button, and locking/unlocking the doors will arm/disarm the alarm system. If so equipped, the PANIC button will activate the alarm if pressed.
RECEIVER MODULE LOCATION:
The Receiver Module and antenna are incorporated into the ETAC ECU on the back side of the fuse block in the driver's side of the dash. See Fig 2 .
ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS:
This is a factory-installed system and is "hard-wired" into the vehicle. Refer to the appropriate service manual for specific electrical connections.
DENSO & OMRON/DENSO COPY TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING
- You can program up to 4 transmitters. You must program all transmitters at the same time.
- Insert the key into the ignition lock on the steering column. Do not turn it on.
- With the ignition key off, connect the MUT-II scan tool into the data link connector.
- Within 10 seconds of plugging in the MUT-II, press the hazard switch 6 times. The door locks will cycle indication you are in the programming mode. See Fig 3 .
- Press either the LOCK or UNLOCK button on the first transmitter slowly three times within 10 seconds. The power door locks should cycle after the first transmitter is programmed.
- Press either the LOCK or UNLOCK button on the second transmitter slowly three times within 10 seconds. The door locks should cycle after the second transmitter is programmed. The same procedure applies to a third or fourth transmitter.
- Disconnect the MUT-II, remove the ignition key. Verify that all transmitters operate properly.
OMRON RKE 2001 DIAMANTE & MONTERO SPORT (FACTORY-INSTALLED - SEE GROUP 42 IN SERVICE MANUAL)
SYSTEM OPERATION:
The system will not operate if doors are open or if the key is in the ignition. Push the UNLOCK button once to unlock the driver's door and illuminate the dome light for 15 seconds. Push the UNLOCK button again to unlock the passenger doors. Push the LOCK button to lock all doors; the dome light and hazard lights will flash twice to confirm locking operation. If the door is not opened within 30 seconds, the system will relock the doors. If equipped with the factory alarm system, locking/unlocking the doors will arm/disarm the alarm system. If equipped, the TRUNK button must be pressed twice to unlock the trunk. This system has an answer back feature which flashes the turn signal and side marker lights and sounds the horn when the system is activated (locked) and flashes the lights when deactivated (unlocked). These answer back functions can be customized. Refer to TSB-00-42A-004 or Group 42 in the service manual for more information concerning the RKE answer back feature.
On vehicles with factory-installed security systems, the remote transmitter will have a PANIC button. Locking/unlocking the doors will arm/disarm the alarm system. If so equipped, the PANIC button will activate the horn/alarm if pressed.
Receiver Location: See Fig 4 .
ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS:
This is a factory-installed system and is "hard-wired" into the vehicle. Refer to the appropriate service manual for specific electrical connections.
OMRON TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING - HOW TO REGISTER THE SECRET CODE:
See Fig 5 .
Each transmitter has its own stored secret code. When replacing the transmitter, receiver, or when an RKE problem is diagnosed as a secret code registration fault, the secret code must be registered in the receiver EEPROM. Since only two different codes can be stored in the EEPROM memory, when the registration procedure below is repeated twice, the old previously-registered code will be cleared. Registration of the secret code should only be done after confirming with the key that the door lock function operates correctly.
- Check that all doors lock and unlock properly when using the key.CAUTION: Always turn the ignition switch to "OFF" before connecting the scan tool.
- Connect the scan tool (MUT-II) to the data link connector.
- Close all doors.
- Within 10 seconds after connecting the scan tool, turn the ignition switch to the ON or ACC position and then back to OFF for 1 second. Do this procedure a total of three times. The doors will lock and unlock once at this time indicating that the system is in the registration mode. See Fig 6 .
- Press either the LOCK or UNLOCK button on the transmitter to be registered three times within 10 seconds. The code is now registered.
- After registration is completed, the door will lock and unlock once.
- If there are two transmitters, register the first, then register the second using the same procedure within one minute. After completing the second registration, the doors will lock and unlock once.NOTE: The registration mode will terminate under any of the following conditions:
- When registration of the two transmitter secret codes is complete.
- When 1 minute has passed after registration mode is started.
- If the scan tool (MUT-II) is disconnected (ground is released).
- If the ignition switch is turned ON.
- If any door is opened.
- Disconnect the MUT-II and remove the ignition key.
- Verify that both transmitters operate properly.
