B38M ENGINE LOW IDLE SPEED

TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN

Reference Number(s): SI M12 06 14, Date of Issue:  July 2014
MINI: F56 (Cooper); With the AISIN automatic transmission
GROUP: Engine Electrical Systems
Superceded Bulletin(s): SI M12 06 14, Date of Issue:  June 2014

This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI M12 06 14 dated June 2014.

SUBJECT

B38M Engine Low Idle Speed

SITUATION

At operating temperature, the engine idle speed could dip low. In rare cases, the engine may stall, requiring a restart.

This could mostly likely occur at a low speed (2nd gear) when coasting off the throttle and slowing to a stop.

This situation could be perceived as an MSA malfunction: intermittent and not easily reproduced.

CAUSE

Unfavorable DME software

CORRECTION

Program the vehicle using ISTA/P 2.53.2 or later.

Target integration level: F056-14-07-503 or higher

If engine idle speed adjustments were made previously, it is important that they be reset to the default value of 0 RPM.

Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.

For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to CenterNet/Aftersales Portal/Service/Workshop Technology/Vehicle Programming.

Always connect a MINI approved battery charger/power supply (SI  M04 08 09  ).

PROCEDURE

Test plan path:

Service Functions/01 Engine/Engine electronics MEVD/Adjustment functions/Idle speed

Once completed, the following calculated idle speed adjustments are set and shown in the test plan:

1. Air conditioning on 0
2. Drive position engaged 0
3. A/C and drive position 0
4. Low battery voltage 0
5. Normal 0

Labor Operation: Labor Allowance: Description:
00 00 006 Refer to KSD2 Performing "vehicle test" (with vehicle diagnosis system - checking faults)
and
61 21 528 Refer to KSD2 Connect an approved battery charger/power supply (indicated in KSD 2 as Charging battery)
and
61 00 730 Refer to KSD2 Programming/encoding control unit(s)
and, if applicable
61 00 006 2 FRU Work time to perform the "idle speed adjustment" test plan (reset to the default value of 0 RPM)

Labor operation code 00 00 006 is a Main labor operation. If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, use the Plus code labor operation 00 00 556 instead.

Even though work time labor operation code 61 00 006 ends in "006," it is not considered a Main labor operation. Also, since the "work time" FRU allowance to be claimed is specified, a separate punch time is not required.

Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance. Enter the Chassis Number, which consists of the last 7 digits of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Click on the "Search" button, and then enter the applicable flat rate labor operation in the FR code field.

If control module(s) fail to reprogram or initializations are required, the additional work must be claimed using separate labor operations found in KSD2 under the defect code listed above.
