Front Axle (With Spring Struts): Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 10 other vehicles, including the 2003 BMW 530i, 2003 BMW 525i, 2002 BMW 530i, 2002 BMW 525i, and 2001 BMW 530i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove front wheels. See 36 10 300 REMOVING OR INSTALLING FRONT OR REAR WHEEL
  2. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING COLUMNS - E38 & E39 article in STEERING.
  3. Unscrew and remove splash guard. See 13 32 051 REPLACING FUEL FILTER (M54)
  4. Disconnect ABS pulse sensor line. See ANTI-LOCK/TRACTION CONTROL article in BRAKES.
  5. Remove left and right brake calipers and tie back (brake lines remain connected). See CALIPER ASSEMBLY .
  6. Assemble special tool (00 0 200) with special tool (00 0 201/202/204/208) and install. Secure special tool (00 0 200) to front suspension eye on engine. See Fig 1.
  7. Remove engine underguard. See 13 32 051 REPLACING FUEL FILTER (M54)
  8. Tighten screws (1, 2). See Fig 2.
  9. Suspend engine in installation position.
  10. Remove clamping screw and remove joint from steering gear. See Fig 3.
  11. Draw power steering fluid out of tank. Do not reuse. Observe waste-disposal regulations.
  12. Unfasten lines on steering gear and seal bore.
  13. WARNING: Release bolt connection of front axle support from side of car. No personnel are permitted to stand underneath the front axle. Risk of Injury.
  14. Support front axle support with trolley jack. Partially loosen trim beside rear screws. Unscrew left and right bolts. See Fig 4.
  15. Remove left and right nuts on wheel arch. See Fig 5.
  16. CAUTION: Spring strut shock absorbers must not tilt or hang outwards. Damage to ball joints and wheel bearings may occur.
  17. Lower car jack. Each spring strut must be held by a separate person.
