TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
| MINI: | R55; R56; R57; R58; R60; All with the N18 engine |
| GROUP: | Cooling Systems |
SERVICE INFORMATION
Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before customer delivery. In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please perform the procedure the next time the vehicle is in the shop.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves R55, R56, R57, R58 and R60 MINI/Cooper S vehicles with N18 engines which were produced from 3/2012 to 6/2012.
Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as "Open" when checked either in AIR, the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader.
SITUATION
Internal corrosion could form in the engine coolant temperature sensor. This corrosion leads to internal bridging of the contacts, which can cause an inaccurate engine temperature reading. This false reading could lead to difficulty in the engine starting and/or a "Service Engine Soon" lamp being illuminated.
CORRECTION
Replace the upper coolant hose with a modified hose that houses a new engine temperature sensor. An adapter harness needs to be fitted to the car to utilize this new sensor.
Only then:
If the hose with temperature sensor is no longer available from MINI USA, then replace thermostat as outlined below.
PROCEDURE
For coolant hose with sensor:
- Follow the attachment for the correct repair procedure.
If the coolant hose with temperature sensor is unavailable:
- Replace the thermostat and the adapter harness
* Certain parts stock of coolant hoses with the integrated temp sensor have been depleted.
* If the PN lookup shows none in stock, replace the thermostat with PN 11 53 7 647 751 and adapter harness 12 51 8 611 289.
