SUBJECT

N16 and N18 Engine: Engine Ventilation Heating Faults Stored in DME Fault Memory After Programming 

SITUATION

After reprogramming the vehicle to integration level R056-11-11-503 (ISTA/P P45.1.3.0) or higher, one of the following fault codes are stored in the DME fault memory:

Vehicles with N16 engine: 

Vehicles with N18 engine: 

CAUSE

Due to a DME software change, the diagnostic monitoring capability is improved for the engine ventilation heating system. However, a fault will be stored in the fault memory because the engine ventilation heater circuit has a malfunction currently present. One of the following may be the cause:

PROCEDURE

  1. Follow the applicable test plan for the fault stored. If the test plan is inconclusive, manually verify the integrity of the circuit using the wiring schematic and its component locations in ISTA/D. The total circuit resistance when connected properly is approximately 12.5-15.5Ω.
  2. If an electrical connection is found loose then correct the connection and retest the system.
  3. Check the installation location of crankcase ventilation relay P/N 61 36 8 373 700. This relay may be missing or installed in the wrong location. Verify the proper relay location using the ISTA/D component locations and install it in the correct location.
  4. After correcting connections, installing or replacing components verify that faults no longer exist in DME fault memory by performing a vehicle test.
