Occupant Classification Sensor - Original Equipment: Installation

All seats 

  1. Bend the retaining tab back on the pressure sensor bracket.

    NOTE: The OCSM must be correctly positioned and securely riveted in place. Failure to do so may set a DTC in the RCM.
  3. Install the OCSM and rivets to the seat cushion frame bracket.

  5. Connect the OCSM electrical connector.

    WARNING: Install a new occupant classification sensor (OCS) system service kit as a complete assembly. Never install only part of the kit components. Failure to follow this instruction may result in incorrect operation of the OCS system and increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
    NOTE: Failure to route the OCS components through the correct seat cushion support opening may cause component failure.
    NOTE: While positioning the seat cushion frame and OCS assembly, be careful not to damage any of the components. Failure to do so may result in component failure.
    NOTE: If the OEM OCS is not being installed, install a OCS service kit using all parts in the kit.
  7. Position the OCS bladder to the seat cushion frame.
    • Feed the pressure sensor and hose through the center opening in the seat cushion frame support assembly.

  9. Install the OCS bladder pin-type retainers.

    NOTE: When the pressure sensor is installed correctly, an audible click will be heard and the pressure sensor will not be able to be removed from its bracket without disengaging the retaining tab.
  11. Install the pressure sensor.
    • Make sure the pressure sensor hose is routed correctly and is not kinked during installation.
    • Install the pressure sensor onto the seat cushion frame bracket.
    • Make sure the retaining tab is completely engaged.
    • Connect the electrical connector.

  13. Position the seat cushion pad and seat cushion trim cover to the seat cushion frame, then attach the hook-and-loop strip at the rear of the seat cushion trim cover.
  14. Attach all the seat cushion trim cover J-clips.
  15. Seats with heat 

  16. Connect the heated seat electrical connector.
  17. Seats with power 

  18. Install the power seat control switch to the side shield.
  19. All seats 

  20. Install the side shield and rear screw.
  21. Seats with power 

  22. Install the power seat switch knobs.
  23. Seats with manual recline 

  24. Install the recline handle.
  25. All seats 

  26. Install the passenger seat. For additional information, refer to SEATING article.
  27. WARNING: Install a new occupant classification sensor (OCS) system service kit as a complete assembly. Never install only part of the kit components. Failure to follow this instruction may result in incorrect operation of the OCS system and increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
    WARNING: Make sure the front passenger seat repair is complete, the seat and all attached components (head restraint, seat side shield, etc.) are correctly assembled, and the seat is correctly installed to the vehicle before carrying out the System Reset. Failure to follow these instructions may result in incorrect operation of the occupant classification sensor (OCS) system and increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
    NOTE: To prevent system failure, it is necessary to carry out the occupant classification system (OCS) reset of the OCS when a front passenger seat cushion is disassembled, a new trim cover installed or an OCS service kit is installed. A scan tool is used to trigger the command to carry out the OCS reset.
    NOTE: To prevent system failure, the following precautions must be taken before carrying out the occupant classification system (OCS) reset:
    • Make sure the voltage to the OCS module is above 8.0 volts and less than 18.0 volts.
    • Make sure the OCS is not at a temperature below 6°C (42°F) or above 36°C (97°F) when initiating the OCS reset process. If the vehicle has been exposed to extreme cold or hot temperatures, the vehicle must be exposed and kept at a temperature within the limits, 6°C to 36°C (42°F to 97°F) for a minimum of 30 minutes.
    • Make sure nothing is present on the passenger seat before carrying out the OCS reset and nothing is placed on the seat during the process.
    • Make sure a minimum 8-second time period has passed after cycling the ignition switch ON before the carrying out the OCS reset process.
    NOTE: If the first attempt to carry out the occupant classification system (OCS) reset is unsuccessful, a second attempt must be made. If the second attempt to carry out the OCS reset is unsuccessful a second time, a new OCS service kit must be installed.
  28. Carry out the OCS reset.
  29. Cycle the ignition switch from ON to OFF.
  30. NOTE: The ignition switch must be cycled after carrying out the OCS reset.
  31. Cycle the ignition switch from OFF to ON.
  32. Prove out the SRS as follows:

    Turn the ignition key from ON to OFF. Wait 10 seconds, then turn the key back to ON and visually monitor the air bag warning indicator with the air bag modules installed. The air bag warning indicator will light continuously for approximately 6 seconds and then turn off. If an SRS fault is present, the air bag warning indicator will:

    - fail to light.

    - remain lit continuously.

    - flash.

    The flashing might not occur until approximately 30 seconds after the ignition switch has been turned from the OFF to the ON position. This is the time required for the RCM to complete the testing of the SRS. If the air bag warning indicator is inoperative and a SRS fault exists, a chime will sound in a pattern of 5 sets of 5 beeps. If this occurs, the air bag warning indicator and any SRS fault discovered must be diagnosed and repaired.

    Clear all continuous DTCs from the RCM and OCSM using a scan tool.
