Preliminary Procedure

  1. Connect Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). See Fig 1. DLC is located under instrument panel between steering column and the radio. See Figure. Using WDS or NGS tester, perform DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST. If scan tool displays CKT 914, CKT 915 or CKT 70=ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, repair module communications concern. See MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - MUSTANG article. If scan tool displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Generic Electronic Module (GEM), perform TEST A: NO COMMUNICATION WITH GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. If scan tool displays SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record continuous DTCs. Erase continuous DTCs. Perform self-test diagnostics for GEM using scan tool. If GEM DTCs are retrieved, perform appropriate test under SYSTEM TEST. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table. Codes listed in this table are only for testing covered in this article. For complete DTC listing, see MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - MUSTANG article. If no DTCs are retrieved, repair by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS.

(2) Using scan tool, retrieve and document all continuous Generic Electronic Module (GEM) DTCs. Perform GEM self-test. If DTC B1342 is retrieved again, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
