Test K: NVM Configuration Failure

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). See Figure. DLC is located under instrument panel between steering column and radio. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using WDS or NGS tester, perform instrument cluster self-test. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article. If no DTCs are retrieved, system is okay at this time. If only DTC B2141 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B2141 and DTC U1147 are retrieved together, perform TEST C: INVALID/MISSING DATA FOR VEHICLE SECURITY . After repair, clear DTCs and repeat self-test.
  2. Use diagnostic card for PCM active command KEEP ALIVE MEMORY RESET. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Turn ignition switch to RUN position for 30 seconds. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Attempt to start vehicle. If vehicle does not start, go to next step. If vehicle starts, system is okay at this time.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Using WDS or NGS tester, clear all continuous DTCs. Turn ignition switch to RUN position for 30 seconds. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Using WDS or NGS tester, perform instrument cluster self-test. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM under ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - MUSTANG article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If no DTCs are retrieved, system is okay at this time. If DTC B2141 is retrieved, go to next step. If any other DTCs are retrieved, perform appropriate test. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After repair, clear DTCs and repeat self-test.
  4. Verify PCM calibration is correct for vehicle. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If calibration is correct, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Cycle ignition switch to RUN position using 2 encoded ignition keys. After replacing instrument cluster, perform TEST J: SECURITY IDENTIFICATION DOES NOT MATCH BETWEEN INSTRUMENT CLUSTER & POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE . After repair, clear DTCs and repeat self-test.
