Through increasing the fuel pressure via the common rail high pressure pump by 4.5 bar up to 1600 bar the temperature of the fuel also increases. To protect the fuel tank from overheating, the CDI control unit (N3/9) reads the fuel temperature sensor (B50) (model 164.1/8, 203.0/2, 209.3/4, 211.0/2/6, 219.3, 221.0/1, 251.0/1, 461, 463) or the fuel temperature sensor (B50) (model 204.0/2) and thus monitors the temperature of the fuel supplied to the common rail high-pressure pump. If the temperature of the fuel delivered to the common rail high pressure pump goes above 90°C the injection quantity and rail pressure are automatically reduced. This causes the fuel less to be less compressed. The quantity control valve (Y94) diverts excess fuel back into the tank.
If the temperature of the fuel supplied to the common rail high-pressure pump falls below 90°C, the tank protection function is deactivated by the CDI control unit.
