A/C Does Not Work

PINPOINT TEST 19 A/C DOES NOT WORK DESCRIPTION

PINPOINT TEST 19 A/C DOES NOT WORK
DESCRIPTION
  • A/C compressor clutch does not engage when A/C is turned on
PINPOINT TEST 19 A/C DOES NOT WORK INSPECTION & ACTION

PINPOINT TEST 19 A/C DOES NOT WORK
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 PRELIMINARY CHECKS
  • Perform the following preliminary checks:
    • A/C system (such as belts, hoses)
    • A/C switches
    • Related fuse(s)
    • Cooling system (overheating)
  • Are all checks OK?
Yes Go to next step.
No Service as required. Verify symptom no longer exists.
2 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO A/C CLUTCH
NOTE:
  • If the A/C clutch will engage, follow the "Yes" Action of this test step. If not, or unsure, continue with this test step.
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect A/C cycling switch connector 0740-201-46
  • Install jumper wire in the A/C cycling switch connector to complete the circuit.
  • Disconnect A/C clutch field coil connector 0740-203.
  • Connect multimeter between power pin and ground pin at A/C clutch field coil connector.
  • Start engine.
  • Turn A/C on, wait 15 seconds.
  • Check voltage reading.
  • After testing, turn key off and reconnect A/C clutch field coil connector 0740-203.
  • Was voltage greater than 10.5 volts?
Yes Remove jumper. Reconnect A/C cycling switch. See A/C CYCLING SWITCH DESCRIPTION to diagnose symptom.
No No voltage to A/C clutch. Go to next step.
3 CHECK ACCS INPUT TO POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) WITH A/C ON
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect A/C cycling switch connector 0740-201 and install jumper wire in the connector.
  • Connect WDS or equivalent tester.
  • Start engine.
  • A/C ON.
  • Monitor ACCS PID.
  • After testing, remove jumper and reconnect A/C cycling switch connector 0740-201-46
  • Was the ACCS PID "ON"?
Yes Go to next step.
No The PCM is not receiving the ACCS signal. As a result, the PCM will not allow the A/C to turn on. See A/C CLUTCH RELAY (ACCR) MALFUNCTION step 7.
4 PERFORM PCM QUICK TEST
  • Perform the PCM quick test. See PCM QUICK TEST .
  • Are any DTCs displayed during Continuous Memory, Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO) or Key ON, Engine Running (KOER) Self Tests?
Yes Check for cause. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX - POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) .
No See SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART - CLIMATE CONTROL for further diagnosis. Go to next step.
