Pinpoint Test 3: The Speed Control Does Not Disengage When The Brakes Are Applied

PINPOINT TEST 3: SPEED CONTROL

PINPOINT TEST 3 THE SPEED CONTROL DOES NOT DISENGAGE WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 VERIFY SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: PCM Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) PID.
Drive the vehicle and engage the cruise control.
Monitor the PCM TPS PID voltage while tapping the brake pedal to disengage the cruise control.
Does the PID display a return to base TPS voltage?
Yes INFORM the customer that tapping the brake pedal only disengages the cruise control and the brakes must be used to slow the vehicle down.
No GO to the next step.
2 CHECK THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE/ACCELERATOR CABLE Key OFF.
NOTE:
  • Make sure the floor mat, insulation, wiring harnesses location, and other item do not interfere with the accelerator pedal and linkage.

Visually inspect the cruise control cable connections, the throttle body linkage, and the cruise control actuator pulley cover.
Are the cruise control cable connections, the throttle body linkage, and the cruise control actuator pulley cover OK?
Yes GO to the next step.
No INSTALL a new cruise control cable or accelerator cable. To install a new cruise control cable, see SPEED CONTROL CABLE -- 2.3L or SPEED CONTROL CABLE -- 3.0L . TEST the system for normal operation. To install a new accelerator cable, see ACCELERATOR CABLE -- 2.3L or ACCELERATOR CABLE -- 3.0L (4V) . TEST the system for normal operation.
3 CHECK THE STOP LAMPS FOR CORRECT OPERATION
Check the stop lamps for correct operation by firmly applying and releasing the brake pedal.
Do the stop lamps operate correctly?
Yes GO to the next step.
No See SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART -- STOP LAMPS to continue diagnosis of the stop lamps.
4 CHECK THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATOR CIRCUIT Key ON.
Measure the voltage between the cruise control actuator 0120-101 pin 9, circuit (T/O), harness side and ground while firmly applying the brake pedal.
Is any voltage present?
Yes GO to the next step.
No INSTALL a new cruise control actuator.
See SPEED CONTROL ACTUATOR . TEST the system for normal operation.
5 CHECK CIRCUITS (T/O) AND (R/LG) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Key OFF.
Disconnect the speed control deactivator switch 0120-102
Key ON.
Measure the voltage between the cruise control actuator 0120-101 pin 9, circuit (T/O), harness side and ground.
Is any voltage present?
Yes REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
No INSTALL a new cruise control deactivator switch.
See SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATOR SWITCH . TEST the system for normal operation.
