AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS PINPOINT TEST 1: SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM DOES NOT RELEASE/LOCK PROPERLY

PINPOINT TEST 1 SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM DOES NOT RELEASE/LOCK PROPERLY
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 TEST CIRCUIT (R) WIRE FOR AN OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect brake shift interlock connector 0518-01.
  • Key ON.
  • Measure the voltage between the brake shift interlock, 0518-01 pin 3 (R) and ground.
  • Is B+ present?
Yes Go to step 2.
No Repair open circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
2 TEST CIRCUIT (B) WIRE FOR AN OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Measure the resistance between the brake shift interlock, 0518-01 pin 2 (B) and ground.
  • Is the resistance 5 ohms or less?
Yes Go to step 3.
No Repair open circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
3 TEST CIRCUIT (R/LG) FOR CONTINUITY TO GROUND
  • Measure the resistance between the brake shift interlock, 0518-01 pin 1 (R/LG) and ground.
  • Is the resistance 5 ohms or less?
Yes Go to step 6.
No Go to step 4.
4 TEST CIRCUIT (B) FOR AN OPEN
  • Disconnect brake pedal position (BPP) switch 0918-01.
  • Measure the resistance between BPP switch, 0918-01 pin 1 (B) and ground.
  • Is resistance 5 ohms or less?
Yes Go to step 5.
No Repair open circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
5 TEST CIRCUIT (R/LG) FOR AN OPEN
  • Measure the resistance between the BPP switch, 0918-01 pin 3 (R/LG) and the brake shift interlock, 0518-01 pin 1 circuit (R/LG).
  • Is the resistance 5 ohms or less?
Yes Replace the brake pedal position (BPP) switch.
See BRAKE PEDAL POSITION (BPP) SWITCH REMOVAL/INSTALLATION . Test the system for normal operation.
No Repair open circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
6 TEST THE INPUT TO THE BRAKE SHIFT INTERLOCK
  • While applying the brake pedal, measure the voltage at the brake shift interlock 0518-01 pin 1 (R/LG).
  • Is B+ present?
Yes Replace the shift lock actuator.
See SHIFT LOCK ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION . Test the system for normal operation.
No Go to step 7.
7 TEST CIRCUIT (BR) FOR AN OPEN
  • Disconnect brake pedal position (BPP) switch 0918-01.
  • Measure the voltage between the BPP switch, 0918-01 pin 3 (BR) and ground.
  • Is B+ present?
Yes Replace the brake pedal position (BPP) switch.
See BRAKE PEDAL POSITION (BPP) SWITCH REMOVAL/INSTALLATION . Test the system for normal operation.
