Assembly Note

WARNING:
  • Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an air bag module. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
  • Carry a live side air bag module with the air bag and tear seam pointed away from your body. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
  • Do not set a live side air bag module down on the cover tear seam. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
  • After deployment, the air bag surface can contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterward. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
  • Never probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so can result in air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
  • Vehicle sensor orientation is critical for proper system operation. If a vehicle equipped with an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) is involved in a collision, inspect the sensor mounting bracket and wiring pigtail for deformation. Replace and properly position the sensor or any other damaged supplemental restraint system (SRS) components whether or not the air bag is deployed. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
  • To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before servicing, replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.

    Refer to the AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM COMPONENT LOCATIONS to determine location of the front air bag sensors .

    The side air bag sensors are located at or near the base of the B-pillar.

    To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped). Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

  • The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system repair only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
NOTE:
  • If a seat equipped with a seat-mounted side air bag system is being repaired the air bag system must be deactivated per the deactivation procedure. Refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article .
NOTE:
  • Restraint system diagnostic tools must be installed under the seats in the side air bag to floor connector.
NOTE:
  • Diagnostics or repairs are not to be carried out on a side air bag system or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) with the seat in the vehicle. Prior to attempting to diagnose/repair the side air bag system or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) the seat must be removed from the vehicle and the restraint system diagnostic tool must be installed in side air bag connector at the floor connector. The restraint system diagnostic tool must be removed prior to operating the vehicle.
NOTE:
  • Diagnostics may be carried out on seat systems other than the side air bag system or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) (lumbar, climate controlled, heated, power seat track) with the seat installed in the vehicle as long as the restraint system diagnostic tool is installed under the seat in the side air bag to floor connector.
NOTE:
  • After diagnosing/repairing a seat system the restraint system diagnostic tool must be removed before operating the vehicle.
NOTE:
  • A repair is made by installing a new part only. If a new part is installed and the new part does not correct the condition, install the original part and carry out the diagnostic procedure again.
NOTE:
  • If a side air bag deployment took place, a new seatback pad, trim cover, and side air bag module must be installed. A new seatback frame should be installed if necessary.

Vehicles With Side Air Bag

WARNING:
  • Inspect the mounting surfaces of the side air bag module and the seat back frame mounting for any foreign objects before installing the side air bag module. If any foreign objects are found, remove them. Failure to do so may result in personal injury in the event of an air bag deployment.
WARNING:
  • Inspect the side air bag cavity in the seat back pad for any foreign objects. If any foreign objects are found, remove them. Failure to do so may result in personal injury in the event of an air bag deployment.
WARNING:
  • Before installing the side air bag module, check the air bag for damage and foreign objects. If any foreign objects are found, remove them. Failure to do so may result in personal injury in the event of an air bag deployment.
  1. Install the side air bag module.
    1. Install the side air bag module.
    2. Install the nuts.

  2. Route the side air bag module wire harness. Install the locators to the seat backrest frame.

    All Vehicles 

  3. If equipped with manual lumbar, install the lumbar support.

  4. If equipped with manual lumbar, connect the lumbar support cable.

  5. If equipped with manual lumbar, install the manual lumbar control screws.

  6. Install the front backrest rest pad to the front backseat rest frame.

  7. Install the front seat backrest trim cover.

  8. Connect the front seat backrest J-retainer.
  9. If equipped, install the headrest guides and headrest.

  10. Install the front seat backrest.
    1. Install the backrest.
    2. Install the pivot nut.

  11. Install the front seat backrest bolts, if equipped with heated seats, connect the backrest heated grid electrical connector.

  12. Install the inboard seat cushion side shield.

  13. If equipped, install the lumbar support knob.

  14. Install the outboard seat cushion side shield.
    1. Install the shield, if equipped with a power/heated seat, connect the electrical connector(s).
    2. Install the screw.
    3. Install the seat backrest lever handle.

  15. If equipped, install the seat height adjustment control.

    CAUTION:
    • Use care when handling the seat and track assembly. Dropping the assembly or sitting on a seat not secured in the vehicle may result in damaged components.
  16. Install the driver seat.
    1. Position the driver seat, if equipped with power seats, connect the electrical connector.
    2. Install the seat track to floor bolts.
  17. If equipped with power seats, connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT .
  18. Position the driver seat forward.

  19. Install the seat track to floor nuts.
  20. If equipped with power seats, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait one minute. For additional information, refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT .

    Vehicles With Side Air Bag

  21. Remove the special tool from the driver seat side air bag module body harness electrical connector.

  22. Connect the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector.

    All Vehicles

  23. Remove the special tool from the driver seat safety belt pretensioner body harness electrical connector.

  24. Connect the driver seat safety belt pretensioner electrical connector.
  25. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT .
  26. With the remaining special tools still in place, prove out the air bag system. For additional information, refer to SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
  27. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT .

  28. Remove the special tool from the passenger-side safety belt pretensioner body harness electrical connector.

  29. Connect the passenger seat safety belt pretensioner electrical connector.

    Vehicles With Side Air Bag

  30. Remove the special tool from the passenger seat side air bag module body harness electrical connector.

  31. Connect the passenger seat side air bag module electrical connector.

  32. Remove the special tool to the instrument panel harness side of the passenger air bag module electrical connector.

  33. Connect the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
  34. Raise the glove compartment.
    • Press the locking tabs.

  35. Remove the special tool from the steering column harness side of the driver air bag module electrical connector.

  36. Connect the driver air bag module electrical connector.

  37. Install the driver air bag connector access cover.
  38. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT .
  39. Prove out the air bag system. For additional information, refer to SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
  40. Check the restraint system for correct operation.
