Pinpoint Test 2: Unusual Starter Noise

PINPOINT TEST 2 - UNUSUAL STARTER NOISE

PINPOINT TEST 2 UNUSUAL STARTER NOISE
STEP  INSPECTION  ACTION 
1 CHECK STARTER MOUNTING
  • Inspect the starter mounting bolts and brackets for looseness.
  • Is the starter motor mounted properly? 
Yes Go to step 2.
No Install the starter motor properly.
See STARTERS article in Engine .
2 CHECK FOR ENGINE NOISE
  • Key OFF.
  • Connect a remote starter switch between the starter solenoid B and S terminals.
  • Engage the starter motor and verify the noise is due to the starter operation.
  • Is the noise due to the starter motor engagement? 
Yes Go to step 3.
No See ENGINE SYMPTOM CHART  to continue the diagnosis
3 CHECK FOR UNUSUAL WEAR
  • Remove the starter motor.

    See STARTERS article in Engine .

  • Inspect the ring gear for damaged or worn teeth.

    See STARTERS article in Engine .

  • Is the noise due to ring gear tooth damage? 
Yes Replace the ring gear.
Examine the starter pinion teeth. If damaged, Replace the starter motor.
See STARTERS article in Engine .
Test the system for normal operation.
No Replace the starter motor.
See STARTERS article in Engine .
Test the system for normal operation.
