Mil/TCIL Never On And Mil/TCIL Always On

DETECTION CONDITION AND POSSIBLE CAUSE

13 MIL/TCIL NEVER ON MIL/TCIL ALWAYS ON
DESCRIPTION 
  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) never on
  • Transmission control indicator lamp (TCIL) never on
  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) always on
  • Transmission control indicator lamp (TCIL) always on
MIL/TCIL NEVER ON AND MIL/TCIL ALWAYS ON INSPECTION

STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 WHICH WARNING INDICATOR IS CONCERN ASSOCIATED WITH?
  • Is the symptom associated with the MIL or TCIL warning lamps? 
Yes Go to step 2.
No Service as required,

See INSTRUMENT PANELS article in Accessories & Equipment

2 PRELIMINARY CHECKS
  • Perform the following preliminary checks:
    • Electrical connections.
    • System components relating to warning indicator.
    • Verify fuel filler cap is properly tightened.
    • Are all checks OK? 
Yes Go to step 3.
No Service as required. After repair, if no other symptoms are present, Rerun Quick Test.

3 CHECK SYSTEM INDICATOR LAMPS
  • Is the symptom "TCIL never on" or "MIL never on" (this includes MIL never on during bulb check when the engine is first started)? 
Yes For TCIL Never On:

See TRANSMISSION CONTROL SWITCH (TCS) OR TRANSMISSION CONTROL INDICATOR LAMP (TCIL) CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION , step 8.

For MIL Never On:

See TEST 3: MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) , step 2.

No Go to step 4.
4 CHECK ENGINE OPERATION
  • Does engine start? 
Yes Go to step 5.
No

See DIAGNOSTIC INDEX .

5 CHECK ENGINE IDLE IN PARK OR NEUTRAL
  • Does engine idle rough in Park or Neutral? 
Yes

See ENGINE POOR DRIVEABILITY  .

No Go to step 6.
6 PERFORM PCM QUICK TEST
  • Are any DTCs displayed during Continuous Memory Self Tests, Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO) or Key ON, Engine Running (KOER) or ? 
Yes Check for cause.

See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE NUMBERS .

No Go to step 8.
7 CHECK SYMPTOM INDICATOR WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING
  • Is the MIL or TCIL always on with the engine running? 
Yes For MIL always on:

See TEST 3: MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) . For TCIL always on:

TRANSMISSION CONTROL SWITCH (TCS) OR TRANSMISSION CONTROL INDICATOR LAMP (TCIL) CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION , step 6.

No Go to step 8.

  • Verify test results. If OK,
