Test O: AUTOLAMPS Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Lincoln LS. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Ignition switch must be cycled from LOCK to RUN position to enable Switched System Power (SSP) feature. Always enable SSP feature before proceeding with test procedures.
  1. Turn headlights on. If low beams illuminate, go to next step. If low beams do not illuminate, see TEST E: ONE LOW BEAM INOPERATIVE  .
  2. Test headlight switch. See HEADLIGHT SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS. If headlight switch is okay, go to next step. If headlight switch is defective, replace headlight switch. See HEADLIGHT SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system.
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Turn headlight switch to AUTO position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. Using NGS tester, monitor Instrument Cluster Module (instrument cluster) PID LIGHTSN while illuminating autolamp sensor, then remove light source. PID should indicate NO with light source applied and YES with light source removed. If PID value is as specified, go to next step. If PID value is not as specified, go to step  8 .
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect autolamp sensor 6-pin connector C287. Autolamp sensor is located on top left side of instrument panel. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and autolamp sensor harness connector C287 terminal No. 6 (Green/Red wire). See Fig 1 . If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair Green/Red wire between autolamp sensor and central junction box.
  5. Measure resistance between ground and autolamp sensor harness connector C287 terminal No. 1 (Black wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open or high resistance in Black wire between ground and autolamp sensor. Ground point is located behind center of dash panel.
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster 22-pin connector C220a. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220a terminal No. 19 (White/Blue wire). See Figure . If voltage does not exist, go to next step. If any voltage exists, repair short to power in White/Blue wire between autolamp sensor and instrument cluster.
  7. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220a terminal No. 19 (White/Blue wire). Resistance should be 10 k/ohms or more. Measure resistance of White/Blue wire between instrument cluster harness connector C220a terminal No. 19 and autolamp sensor harness connector C287 terminal No. 4. See Figure and Fig 1 . Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. If resistances are as specified, replace autolamp sensor. See AUTOLAMP SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistances are not as specified, repair open or short to ground White/Blue wire between autolamp sensor and instrument cluster.
  8. Disconnect headlight switch 10-pin connector C205. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and headlight switch harness connector C205 terminal No. 8 (Gray/Orange wire). See Fig 2 . If voltage does not exist, go to next step. If any voltage exists, repair short to power in Gray/Orange wire between headlight switch and instrument cluster.
  9. Disconnect instrument cluster 22-pin connector C220c. Measure resistance between ground and headlight switch connector C205 terminal No. 8 (Gray/Orange wire). Resistance should be 10 k/ohms or more. Measure resistance in Gray/Orange wire between headlight switch connector C205 terminal No. 8 and instrument cluster connector C220c terminal No. 14. See Fig 2 and Fig 3 . Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. If resistances are as specified, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistances are not as specified, repair open or short to ground in Gray/Orange wire between headlight switch and instrument cluster.
