Test P: Single Temperature Controlled Seat Is Inoperative/Does Not Operate Correctly
CAUTION:
On models equipped with side air bags, Air Bag Simulators (Restraint Diagnostic Tool 105-R0012) MUST be connected to all air bag floor connector. After diagnosing/repairing, restraint system diagnostic tool must be removed prior to operating vehicle.
WARNING:
On models equipped with side air bags, system must be deactivated. To deactivate air bag system, disconnect negative battery cable and wait one minute.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position, and set temperature controlled seat switch to ZERO position. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Set temperature controlled seat switch to COOL 5 position. If seat fan motor operates, go to next step. If seat fan motor does not operate, go to step 3 .
- Set temperature controlled seat switch to HEAT 5 position. If seat fan runs then turns off, go to step 27 . If seat fan does not run or turn off, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Set temperature controlled seat switch to ZERO position, and tilt seat to rear. Measure voltage of Red/Black wire by backprobing terminal at temperature controlled seat module. See Figure . If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in Red/Black wire.
- Measure voltage, by backprobing between Red/Black wire terminal and Black wire terminal at temperature controlled seat module. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in Black wire.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage, by backprobing between White/Light Blue wire terminal and Black wire terminal at temperature controlled seat module. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair short to power in White/Light Blue wire.
- Set temperature controlled seat switch to COOL 5 position. Measure voltage of White/Red wire, by backprobing temperature controlled seat switch connector. See Fig 1 . If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to step 10 . If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Set temperature controlled seat switch to HEAT 5 position. Measure voltage of White/Red wire, by backprobing temperature controlled seat switch connector. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, repair short to ground in Pink/White wire. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Measure voltage of White/Red wire, by backprobing temperature controlled seat module connector. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, repair open in White/Red wire. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect inoperative temperature controlled seat module. See Figure . Remove terminal No. 4 (White/Red wire) from connector. Connect temperature controlled seat module. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage of White/Red wire, by backprobing (component side) at temperature controlled seat module. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, repair short to ground in White/Red wire. If voltage is less than 10 volts, replace temperature controlled seat module.
- Disconnect inoperative temperature controlled seat module connector. Install terminal No. 4 (White/Red wire), connect temperature controlled seat module connector. Measure voltage, by backprobing between terminal No. 2 (White/Red wire) and terminal No. 8 (White/Orange wire) at temperature controlled seat switch. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to step 12 . If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Measure voltage, by backprobing between terminal No. 2 (White/Red wire) at temperature controlled seat switch connector and terminal No. 16 (White/Orange wire) at temperature controlled seat module connector. See Figure and Fig 1 . If voltage is greater than 10 volts, repair open in White/Orange wire. If voltage is less than 10 volts, replace temperature controlled seat module.
- Measure voltage, by backprobing between terminals No. 7 (Pink/White wire) and No. 8 (White/Orange wire) at temperature controlled seat switch connector. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, replace temperature controlled seat switch.
- Measure voltage, by backprobing between terminals No. 6 (Pink/White wire) and No. 16 (White/Orange wire) at temperature controlled seat module connector. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in Pink/White wire.
- Measure voltage, by backprobing temperature controlled seat switch connector at terminal No. 5 (Light Green/Orange wire). If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to step 17 . If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Measure voltage, by backprobing temperature controlled seat module connector at terminal No. 7 (Light Green/Orange wire). If voltage is greater than 10 volts, repair open in Light Green/Orange wire. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect inoperative temperature controlled seat module connector. Remove terminal No. 7 (Light Green/Orange wire) from connector. See Figure . Connect temperature controlled seat module. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage of Light Green/Orange wire, by backprobing (component side) at temperature controlled seat module connector. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, repair short to ground in Light Green/Orange wire. If voltage is less than 10 volts, replace temperature controlled seat module. After repairs, disconnect temperature controlled seat module connector. Install terminal No. 7, and connect temperature controlled seat module.
- Measure voltage of Tan/Light Blue wire, by backprobing temperature controlled seat switch connector terminal No. 4. If voltage is 5-8 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, replace temperature controlled seat switch.
- Measure voltage of Tan/Light Blue wire, by backprobing temperature controlled seat module connector terminal No. 15. If voltage is 5-8 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, repair open in Tan/Light Blue wire.
- Measure voltage of Violet wire, by backprobing seat fan motor connector terminal. See Fig 2 . If voltage is greater than 6 volts, go to step 21 . If voltage is less than 6 volts, go to next step.
- Measure voltage of Violet wire, by backprobing temperature controlled seat module connector terminal No. 10. If voltage is greater than 6 volts, repair open in Violet wire. If voltage is less than 6 volts, replace temperature controlled seat module.
- Measure voltage by backprobing between terminals No. 1 (Violet wire) and No. 4 (Black wire) at seat fan motor connector. If voltage is greater than 6 volts, go to step 23 . If voltage is less than 6 volts, go to next step.
- Measure voltage, by backprobing between terminals No. 10 (Violet wire) and No. 3 (Black wire) at temperature controlled seat module connector. If voltage is greater than 6 volts, repair open in Black wire. If voltage is less than 6 volts, replace temperature controlled seat module.NOTE: There is a 4 second time limit to measure voltage before system goes into fault mode, and shuts down.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Set temperature controlled seat switch to ZERO position. Measure voltage by backprobing terminal No. 3 (Red wire) at seat fan motor connector. Set temperature controlled seat switch to COOL 5 position. If voltage is greater than 5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 5 volts, go to step 26 .
- Set temperature controlled seat switch to ZERO position. Measure voltage of Red wire, by backprobing terminal No. 3 at seat fan motor connector. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, replace seat fan motor.NOTE: Seat fan motor is equipped with a non-serviceable fuse. All shorts in seat fan motor circuits must be repaired before installing new seat fan motor.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect temperature controlled seat module harness connector. Remove terminal No. 13 (Red wire) from temperature controlled seat module harness connector. See Figure
. Connect temperature controlled seat module connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Set temperature controlled seat switch to ZERO position. Measure voltage of Red wire, by backprobing temperature controlled seat module terminal No. 13 (component side). If voltage is greater than zero volts, replace temperature controlled seat module. If voltage is greater than zero volts, and seat fan motor does not operate after replacing temperature controlled seat module, replace seat fan motor. If no voltage is indicated, repair short to power in Red wire. If voltage is less than zero, and seat fan motor does not operate after repairing Red wire, replace seat fan motor.NOTE: Seat fan motor is equipped with a non-serviceable fuse. All shorts in seat fan motor circuits must be repaired before installing new seat fan motor.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure terminal No. 13 (Red wire) is removed from temperature controlled seat module connector. Ensure temperature controlled seat module connector is connected. Measure voltage of Red wire, by backprobing temperature controlled seat module terminal No. 13 (component side). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Set temperature controlled seat switch to COOL 5 position. If voltage is greater than 5 volts, repair open or short to ground in Red wire. If voltage is less than 5 volts, replace temperature controlled seat module. After repairs, disconnect temperature controlled seat module. Install terminal No. 13, and connect temperature controlled seat module.
- Set temperature controlled switch to ZERO position. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Set temperature controlled seat switch to COOL 1 position. If seat fan motor operates for one minute, go to step 33 . If seat fan motor does not operate for one minute, go to next step.
- Inspect seat cushion Thermo-Electric Device (TED) exhaust nozzle for air exhausting. Compare with airflow from opposite seat. If airflow is comparable, go to step 31 . If airflow is not comparable, go to next step.
- Inspect seat for damaged or disconnected air ducts. If air ducts are damaged or disconnected, replace or repair air ducts as necessary. If air ducts are not damaged or disconnected, go to next step.
- Inspect seat cushion for correct installation of Thermo-Electric Device (TED). If Thermo-Electric Device (TED) is installed correctly, remove seat cushion trim cover and inspect for worn, damaged components. If any damage is found, repair or replace as necessary. If Thermo-Electric Device (TED) is not installed correctly, reinstall seat cushion Thermo-Electric Device (TED) correctly.
- Inspect seat backrest Thermo-Electric Device (TED) exhaust nozzle for air exhausting. Compare with airflow from opposite seat. If airflow is comparable, go to step 34 . If airflow is not comparable, go to next step.
- Remove back panel of seat backrest trim cover. Inspect backrest for damaged or disconnected air ducts. If air ducts are damaged or disconnected, replace or repair air ducts as necessary, If air ducts are not damaged or disconnected, go to next step.
- Inspect seat backrest for correct installation of Thermo-Electric Device (TED). If Thermo-Electric Device (TED) is installed correctly, remove seat cushion trim cover and inspect for worn, damaged components. If any damage is found, repair or replace as necessary. If Thermo-Electric Device (TED) is not installed correctly, reinstall seat cushion Thermo-Electric Device (TED) correctly.
- Tilt seat to rear. Measure voltage, by backprobing between terminals No. 4 (White/Light Blue wire) and No. 6 (Yellow/Light Blue wire) at seat cushion Thermo-Electric Device (TED) connector. See Fig 3 . If voltage is greater than zero volts, go to next step. If no voltage is indicated, go to step 40 .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect temperature controlled seat module harness connector. Remove terminals No. 1, 2, 11, and 12 from temperature controlled seat module connector. See Figure . Connect temperature controlled seat module connector. Measure voltage, by backprobing between terminals No. 1 and 2 (component side) at temperature controlled seat module connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Set temperature controlled seat switch to COOL 1 position. If voltage is greater than zero volts, go to next step. If no voltage is indicated, go to step 37 .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove temperature controlled seat switch. See SEAT CONTROL SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If temperature controlled seat switch tests okay, replace temperature controlled seat module. If temperature controlled seat switch does not test okay, replace temperature controlled seat switch. After repairs, disconnect temperature controlled seat module. Install terminals No. 1, 2, 11 and 12, and connect temperature controlled seat module.
- Measure voltage of Yellow/Light Blue wire by backprobing terminal No. 1 at temperature controlled seat module connector. If voltage is greater than zero volts, repair short to power in Yellow/Light Blue wire. If no voltage is indicated, go to next step.
- Measure voltage of White/Light Blue wire by backprobing terminal No. 2 at temperature controlled seat module connector. If voltage is greater than zero volts, repair short to power in White/Light Blue wire. If no voltage is indicated, go to next step.
- Measure voltage of Gray/Light Blue wire by backprobing terminal No. 11 at temperature controlled seat module connector. If voltage is greater than zero volts, repair short to power in Gray/Light Blue wire. If no voltage is indicated, repair short to power in Violet/Light Blue wire. After repairs, disconnect temperature controlled seat module. Install terminal No. 11, and connect temperature controlled seat module.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect appropriate temperature controlled seat module connector. Set temperature controlled seat switch to ZERO position. Measure resistance between terminals No. 1 (Yellow/Light Blue wire) and No. 2 (White/Light Blue wire). If resistance is 5-7 ohms, go to step 43 . If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
- Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect appropriate seat cushion Thermo-Electric Device (TED) connector. Measure resistance between terminals No. 4 (White/Light Blue wire) and No. 6 (Yellow/Light Blue wire) at seat cushion Thermo-Electric Device (TED) connector. If resistance is 5-7 ohms, repair open in White/Light Blue wire or Yellow/Light Blue wire. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
- Inspect seat cushion Thermo-Electric Device (TED) pigtail wiring for damage. If seat cushion Thermo-Electric Device (TED) pigtail wiring is damaged, repair wiring as necessary. If seat cushion Thermo-Electric Device (TED) pigtail wiring is not damaged, replace seat cushion Thermo-Electric Device (TED).
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 1 (Yellow/Light Blue wire) at temperature controlled seat module connector. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Yellow/Light Blue wire. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 2 (White/Light Blue wire) at temperature controlled seat module connector. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in White/Light Blue wire. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between terminals No. 11 (Gray/Light Blue wire) and No. 12 (Violet/Light Blue wire) at temperature controlled seat module connector. If resistance is 5-7 ohms, go to step 48 . If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
- Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect seat backrest Thermo-Electric Device (TED) connector. See Fig 3 . Measure resistance between terminals No. 4 (Violet/Light Blue wire) and No. 6 (Gray/Light Blue wire) at seat backrest Thermo-Electric Device (TED) connector. If resistance is 5-7 ohms, repair open in Violet/Light Blue wire or Gray/Light Blue wire. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
- Inspect seat backrest Thermo-Electric Device (TED) pigtail wiring for damage. If seat backrest Thermo-Electric Device (TED) pigtail wiring is damaged, repair wiring as necessary. If seat backrest Thermo-Electric Device (TED) pigtail wiring is not damaged, replace seat backrest Thermo-Electric Device (TED).
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 11 (Gray/Light Blue wire) at temperature controlled seat module connector. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Gray/Light Blue wire. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 12 (Violet/Light Blue wire) at temperature controlled seat module connector. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Violet/Light Blue wire. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, go to next step.
- Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 17 (Black/Light Blue wire) at temperature controlled seat module connector. If voltage is greater than zero volts, repair short to power in Black/Light Blue wire. If no voltage is indicated, go to next step.
- Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 18 (Dark Green/Light Green wire) at temperature controlled seat module connector. If voltage is greater than zero volts, repair short to power in Dark Green/Light Green wire. If no voltage is indicated, go to next step.
- Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 19 (Dark Blue/Orange wire) at temperature controlled seat module connector. If voltage is greater than zero volts, repair short to power in Dark Blue/Orange wire. If no voltage is indicated, go to next step.
- Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 20 (Red/Light Blue wire) at temperature controlled seat module connector. If voltage is greater than zero volts, repair short to power in Red/Light Blue wire. If no voltage is indicated, go to next step.NOTE: Ensure temperature is stable and equalized, before measuring resistance between seat cushion and seat backrest.
- Measure and note resistance between terminals No. 17 (Black/Light Blue wire) and No. 18 (Dark Green/Light Green wire) at temperature controlled seat module connector. If resistance is 1-6 k/ohms, go to step 56 . If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
- Disconnect seat cushion Thermo-Electric Device (TED) harness connector. Measure resistance between terminals No. 2 (Black/Light Blue wire) and No. 3 (Dark Green/Light Green wire) component side. If resistance is 1-6 k/ohms, repair open in Black/Light Blue wire or Dark Green/Light Green wire. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 17 (Black/Light Blue wire) at temperature controlled seat module connector. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Black/Light Blue wire. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 18 (Dark Green/Light Green wire) at temperature controlled seat module connector. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Dark Green/Light Green wire. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, go to next step.NOTE: Ensure temperature is stable and equalized, before measuring resistance between seat cushion and seat backrest.
- Measure and note resistance between terminals No. 19 (Dark Blue/Orange wire) and No. 20 (Red/Light Blue wire) at temperature controlled seat module connector. If resistance is 1-6 k/ohms, go to step 60 . If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
- Disconnect appropriate seat backrest Thermo-Electric Device (TED) connector. Measure resistance between terminals No. 2 (Red/Light Blue wire) and No. 3 (Dark Blue/Orange wire) component side. If resistance is 1-6 k/ohms, repair open in Red/Light Blue wire or Dark Blue/Orange wire. If resistance is not as specified, go to step 42 .
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 19 (Dark Blue/Orange wire) at temperature controlled seat module. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Dark Blue/Orange wire. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 20 (Red/Light Blue wire). If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Red/Light Blue wire. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, go to next step.
- Disconnect appropriate seat cushion Thermo-Electric Device (TED) and seat backrest Thermo-Electric Device (TED) connectors. Measure resistance between terminals No. 2 (Black/Light Blue wire) and No. 3 (Dark Green/Light Green wire) of component side at seat cushion Thermo-Electric Device (TED). Measure resistance between terminals No. 2 (Red/Light Blue wire) and No. 3 (Dark Blue/Orange wire) component side at seat backrest Thermo-Electric Device (TED). Compare resistance measurements for both seat cushion and backrest thermistors. See AMBIENT TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE
table. See Fig 3
. If both thermistor readings are within specification for temperature range, go to next step. If both thermistor readings are not within specification for temperature range, replace appropriate seat cushion or seat backrest Thermo-Electric Device (TED).AMBIENT TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE

- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect appropriate temperature controlled seat module connector. Remove terminal No. 14 (White wire) from temperature controlled seat module connector. See Figure . Connect temperature controlled seat module connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage of White wire by backprobing terminal No. 14 (component side) at temperature controlled seat module. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, replace temperature controlled seat module.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure terminal No. 14 is still removed from appropriate temperature controlled seat module connector. Disconnect appropriate seat fan motor connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage of White wire at seat fan motor connector. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open or short to ground in White wire. Disconnect appropriate temperature controlled seat module connector. Install terminal No. 14 (White wire), and connect temperature controlled seat module connector.
- Inspect seat fan motor pigtail wiring for damage. If seat fan motor pigtail wiring is damaged, repair wiring as necessary. If seat fan motor pigtail wiring is not damaged, replace seat fan motor.NOTE: There is a 4 second time limit to measure voltage before system goes into fault mode, and shuts down.NOTE: Voltage drop specification not available from manufacturer.
- Set temperature controlled seat switch to COOL 1 position. Measure voltage of White wire at temperature controlled seat module connector terminal No. 14. If voltage drops while seat fan motor is running, replace temperature controlled seat module. If voltage does not drop while seat fan motor is running, go to next step.NOTE: There is a 4 second time limit to measure voltage before system goes into fault mode, and shuts down.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Set temperature controlled seat switch to ZERO position. Disconnect appropriate seat fan motor connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage of White wire at seat fan motor connector terminal No. 2. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to step 66 . If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in White wire.
