Test M: Virtual Image Cluster (VIC) Does Not Respond To NGS Tester

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Lincoln Continental. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Virtual Image Cluster (VIC) Gray 20-pin harness connector C256 located behind left side of instrument panel. Inspect harness connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair harness connector as necessary and retest system for normal operation. If harness connector is okay, reconnect harness connector. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Perform data link diagnostic procedure. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If NGS tester indicates VIC: NO RESPONSE ON CKT 914 (BUS +), go to next step. If NGS tester indicates VIC: NO RESPONSE ON CKT 914 (BUS -), go to step  3 .
  2. NOTE: Ignition keys will need to be reprogrammed when VIC is replaced.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect NGS tester. Disconnect VIC harness connector C256. Measure resistance of Tan/Orange wire between terminal No. 11 at VIC harness connector C256 and terminal No. 2 at DLC. See Figure and Fig 1 . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace VIC. Using New Generation Star (NGS) tester with SERVICE CARD 4.0 or higher select SERVICE BAY FUNCTIONS then VIC then ENTER SECURITY ACCESS and PERIMETER RESET. DO NOT perform any other selections. Turn ignition OFF and disconnect NGS tester from Data Link Connector (DLC). Cycle ignition switch from OFF to RUN 5 times staying at ON for 3 seconds or more and OFF for 2 seconds or more. This initializes PCM/PATS and now PID PCM_ID = STORED. Theft indicator will go out after 3 seconds (prove out) when ignition is switched to ON and vehicle will start. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Tan/Orange wire between VIC and DLC.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect VIC harness connector C256. Disconnect NGS tester. Measure resistance of Pink/Light Blue wire between terminal No. 1 at VIC harness connector C256 and terminal No. 10 at DLC. See Figure and Fig 1 . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace VIC. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Pink/Light Blue wire between VIC and DLC.
