Automatic Transmission Assembly: Installation: Installation

  1. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Using a vernier caliper and a straightedge, measure dimension A between the transmission fitting surface of the engine *1 and the converter fitting surface of the drive plate *2. (#)

    2. Aligning the matchmarks on the transmission case and torque converter, engage the splines of the input shaft and turbine runner.

    3. Engage the splines of the stator shaft and stator while turning the torque converter.

      HINT: 

      Turn the torque converter approximately 180°.

    4. Turn the torque converter and align the matchmarks on the torque converter and transmission case to engage the key of the oil pump drive gear into the slot on the torque converter.

      NOTE:

      Do not push on the torque converter when aligning the matchmarks.

    5. Using a vernier caliper and a straightedge, measure dimension B shown in the illustration and check that B is greater than A (measured in step (#)).

      Standard

      A + 1 mm (0.04 in.) or more

  2. INSTALL TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER 
    1. Coat 2 new O-rings with ATF, and install them to the transmission oil cooler.
    2. Coat 2 new O-rings with ATF, and install them to the spacer.
    3. Install the transmission oil cooler and spacer to the automatic transmission assembly with the 3 bolts.

      Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) 

  3. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL SHAFT LEVER LH 
    1. Install the transmission control shaft lever LH to the automatic transmission assembly with the nut.

      Torque: 16 N*m (163 kgf*cm, 12 ft.*lbf) 

  4. INSTALL TRANSFER DYNAMIC DAMPER 
    1. Install the transfer dynamic damper to the automatic transmission assembly with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 52 N*m (530 kgf*cm, 38 ft.*lbf) 

  5. INSTALL REAR NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR 
    1. Install the rear No. 1 engine mounting insulator to the automatic transmission assembly with the 3 bolts.

      Torque: 60 N*m (612 kgf*cm, 44 ft.*lbf) 

    2. Install the rear engine mounting member to the rear No. 1 engine mounting insulator with the 3 nuts.

      Torque: 38 N*m (380 kgf*cm, 28 ft.*lbf) 

  6. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WITH TRANSFER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Confirm that 2 knock pins are on the transmission fitting surface of the engine block before transmission installation.

    2. Apply clutch spline grease to the round of the crankshaft contact surface (A) with the torque converter centerpiece.

      Clutch spline grease

      Toyota Genuine Clutch Spline Grease or equivalent

      Maximum spread

      About 1 g (0.0353 oz.)

    3. Install the automatic transmission assembly to the engine with the 9 bolts.

      Bolts A and B 

      Torque: 71 N*m (724 kgf*cm, 52 ft.*lbf) 

      Bolt C 

      Torque: 37 N*m (377 kgf*cm, 27 ft.*lbf) 

      NOTE:

      Do not use excess force to pry on the transmission assembly.

      HINT: 

      Make sure that the mark is positioned as shown in the illustration.

  7. INSTALL WATER BY-PASS HOSE 
    1. Tilt down the automatic transmission assembly.

    2. Install the 2 water by-pass hoses to the transmission oil cooler.
    3. Install the water by-pass hose clamp with the bolt.

      Torque: 20 N*m (204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) 

  8. INSTALL WIRE HARNESS 
    1. Install the wire harness clamps to the automatic transmission assembly with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) 

  9. CONNECT CONNECTOR 
    1. Connect the park/neutral position switch connector, transmission wire connector and 2 transmission revolution sensor connectors.

      HINT: 

      Push up the lever until the claw of the transmission wire connector makes a connection sound.

  10. INSTALL REAR ENGINE MOUNTING MEMBER 
    1. Install the rear engine mounting member to the body with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 26 N*m (265 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf) 

  11. INSTALL FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Turn the control shaft lever of the park/neutral position switch counterclockwise until it stops, and turn it clockwise 2 notches to set it to N.

    2. Move the shift lever to N and tighten the nut while lightly pushing the lever toward R.

      Torque: 13 N*m (130 kgf*cm, 9 ft.*lbf) 

      NOTE:

      Do not push the shift lever too hard.

    3. Install the bolt and earth wire to the automatic transmission assembly.

      Torque: 5.4 N*m (55 kgf*cm, 48 in.*lbf) 

  12. INSTALL DRIVE PLATE AND TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SETTING BOLT 
    1. Install the 6 torque converter clutch setting bolts while holding the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench.

      Torque: 41 N*m (418 kgf*cm, 30 ft.*lbf) 

      HINT: 

      Install the black colored bolt first, and then the 5 silver colored bolts.

  13. INSTALL FLYWHEEL HOUSING SIDE COVER 
    1. Install the flywheel housing side cover to the engine assembly.
      NOTE:

      Make sure that the flywheel housing side cover is securely installed.

  14. INSTALL PROPELLER SHAFT WITH CENTER BEARING ASSEMBLY (for 4GR-FSE)  . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 1
  15. INSTALL PROPELLER SHAFT WITH CENTER BEARING ASSEMBLY (for 2GR-FSE)  . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 1
  16. INSPECT AND ADJUST BOTH NO. 2 AND NO. 3 JOINT ANGLE (for 4GR-FSE)  . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 2
  17. INSPECT AND ADJUST BOTH NO. 2 AND NO. 3 JOINT ANGLE (for 2GR-FSE)  . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 2
  18. INSTALL OUTSIDE AIR GUIDE PLATE RH (for 4GR-FSE)  . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 4
  19. INSTALL OUTSIDE AIR GUIDE PLATE RH (for 2GR-FSE)  . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 3
  20. INSTALL FRONT NO. 1 FLOOR HEAT INSULATOR (for 4GR-FSE)  . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 3
  21. INSTALL FRONT NO. 1 FLOOR HEAT INSULATOR (for 2GR-FSE)  . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 4
  22. INSTALL STARTER ASSEMBLY 

    for 4GR-FSE: Refer to INSTALLATION

  23. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION  See step  1
  24. ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION  See step  1
  25. ADD COOLANT 

    for 4GR-FSE: Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 5

    for 2GR-FSE: Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 5

  26. ADD AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID 

    Refer to ADJUSTMENT 

  27. INSPECT FOR COOLANT LEAK (for 4GR-FSE)  . Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 1
  28. INSPECT FOR COOLANT LEAK (for 2GR-FSE)  . Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 1
  29. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER 
  30. RESET MEMORY 

    HINT: 

    Perform the RESET MEMORY (AT initialization) when replacing the automatic transmission assembly.

    for 4GR-FSE: Refer to INITIALIZATION

    for 2GR-FSE: Refer to INITIALIZATION
