Inspection Procedure

  1. READ VALUE OF TECHSTREAM (STEERING ANGLE SENSOR)
    1. Check the Data List for proper functioning of the steering angle sensor.

      ABS/VSC/TRAC

      DIAGNOSTIC NOTE CHART

Tester Display Measurement Item / Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
Steering Angle Sensor Steering sensor / Min.: -1152 deg, Max.: 1150.875 deg Left turn: increase
      Right turn: decrease
      -

OK: Steering wheel turning angle value must be changing.

    NG: Go to step  3

    OK: Go to Next Step

  2. CHECK SKID CONTROL ECU (+BI VOLTAGE)

    1. Remove the skid control ECU but do not disconnect the connectors.
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON.
    3. Measure the voltage of the connectors.

      Standard voltage

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHART

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      S7-1T (+BI) - S5-16 (GND4) 10 to 14 V
      S7-17 (+BI) - S5-22 (GND3) 10 to 14 V
      S7-17 (+BI) - S8-6 (GND2) 10 to 14 V
      S7-17 (+BI) - S8-31 (GND1) 10 to 14 V

NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR

    OK: Go to Next Step

  3. CHECK WIRE HARNESS (STEERING SENSOR - BATTERY)
    1. Disconnect the S9 sensor connector.

    2. Measure the voltage of the wire harness side connector.

      Standard voltage

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHART

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      S9-1 (IG1) - S9-2 (ESS) Ignition switch ON 10 to 14 V
      S9-3 (BAT) - S9-2 (ESS) Always 10 to 14 V

NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR

    OK: Go to Next Step

  4. INSPECT STEERING SENSOR
    Fig 3: Identifying Blinking Pattern

    1. Remove the steering wheel and column lower cover (see REMOVAL ).
    2. Disconnect the steering sensor connector.
    3. Apply battery voltage between terminals 1 (IG1) and 2 (ESS), and 2 (ESS) and 3 (BAT).
    4. Connect an oscilloscope to terminals 9 (SSI-) and 10 (SSI+) of the steering sensor.
    5. Turn the steering column shaft slowly and check the signal waveform.

OK: Waveform is output as shown above in  Fig 3 .

      HINT:

The above signal waveform does not repeat ON and OFF regularly and this ON to OFF interval changes depending on the steering column shaft movement.

    NG: REPLACE STEERING SENSOR

    OK: REPLACE SKID CONTROL ECU
