The pollution sensor is mounted onto the climate control assembly intake above the filter element. The pollution sensor allows the ATCM to monitor the air being drawn into the passenger compartment for contaminants commonly found in traffic pollution, such as hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen.

Power supply for the pollution sensor is provided by the ATCM. The pollution sensor provides separate signals of hydrocarbon and oxidized gases via a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal to the ATCM. With a pollution sensor fitted, the ATCM can control the air intake source to reduce the amount of contaminants entering the passenger compartment.
