ISSUE

There have been reports of vehicles flagging up the following DTCs when the Steering angle Sensor has been replaced or the vehicle has been in an accident. This has led to the ABS Modulator being changed unnecessarily.

C0051-28  - Steering Wheel Position Sensor General Signal Failures Signal bias level out of range/zero adjustment failure

U0428-41  - Invalid Data Received From Steering Angle Sensor Module System Internal Failures General checksum failure

Content

CAUSE

This is caused by the Steering Angle Sensor sending invalid data and the offset failure C0051-28  will stay until a valid value is seen - even after a replacement Steering Angle Sensor has been fitted.

ACTION

If the above DTCs are flagged The following rectification procedure should be carried out:-

Ensure there is no damage to the steering system (rack, track rod arms, ball end joints etc.)

Perform Geometry check on the vehicle and rectify if necessary (ensure the steering angle sensor is reading zero degrees during this process)

Drive the vehicle over 30kph for a few seconds in a straight line.

Perform an ignition reset and clear all fault codes.
