10 MY HEIGHT SENSOR REPLACEMENT

TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN

Reference Number(s): SSM45714, Date of Issue:  September 27, 2010
LAND ROVER: LR4; Range Rover Sport; New Range Rover
CATEGORY: Chassis
AFFECTED VEHICLES: LR4; Range Rover Sport; New Range Rover

SYMPTOM

304000 Suspension System

Issue:

Unnecessary replacement of height sensors on 10 MY vehicles.

Information:  The air suspension ride level module (RLM) and active dynamics suspension module B (SUMB) ECU's include robust checks of the height sensors during vehicle usage. If there is a fault with the height sensor wiring harness, connector, or the height sensor component itself then the system ECU will store a height sensor related DTC.

Action:

If no DTC exists on first inspection of the vehicle then the height sensor does not need to be replaced. Continue standard diagnostics to find the root cause of the customer complaint.

CONTENT

10my height sensors use a different technology from the pre 10 MY height sensors. If a Height sensor related DTC is stored then it is most likely caused by:

  1. Height sensor electrical connector issues concerned with incorrect latching, pins backed out etc.
  2. Height sensor harness issues concerned with harness insulation damage, damage in corresponding harness connectors and corrosion due to water ingress.
  3. Height sensor to bracket fixings being loose.
  4. Height sensor link connection to the suspension arm problems.
  5. Height sensor mounting bracket damage.
  6. Incorrect calibration of height sensors in RLM ECU

These potential problems should be checked in the first instance before a height sensor component fault is assumed.
