The Parallel & Perpendicular Parking Assistance (PPPA) system is intended to assist the driver during parallel and perpendicular parking maneuvers through means of identifying a proper parking slot and controlling the steering wheel during the parallel and perpendicular parking maneuver. The system is defined as "semi-automatic" since the driver maintains the control of the longitudinal movement of the vehicle (i.e., the driver shall provide accelerator and braking inputs). Depending on the driver's parking maneuver selection, the PPPA system is capable of maneuvering a vehicle into a parallel or a perpendicular parking slot on either side (i.e., driver side or passenger side).
The purpose of the system is therefore to assist the driver and not to substitute the driver. The driver must stay in full control of the vehicle's longitudinal acceleration and is responsible for the vehicle's movements.
Parallel Parking Maneuver: Vehicle is positioned in-line with another parked car or cars.
Perpendicular Parking Maneuver: Vehicle is positioned into a parking slot in the rearward direction.
The information regarding the presence and distance of an obstacle is transmitted to the driver in the form of an audible alert and graphic display. The audible alert shall be pulsed at a rate dependent on distance to the obstacle.
The primary components that provide this feature are the Park Assist Module (PAM), Brake System Control Module (BSCM), Auxiliary Switch Bank Module 2 (ASBM2), Display Screen Module (DSM), Front/Rear Park Assist Sensors and Electronic Power Steering (EPS) Module.
