Nag1 Automatic Transmission (Service Information): Removal
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove transmission fill tube bolt from the valve cover.
- Raise and support the vehicle
- Remove any necessary skid plates. Refer to PLATE, SKID, TRANSMISSION, REMOVAL .
- Remove the catalytic convertor. Refer to CONVERTER, CATALYTIC, REMOVAL .
- Mark propeller shaft and axle companion flanges for assembly alignment.
- Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, REAR, REMOVAL .
- Remove the front propeller shaft, if necessary. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, REAR, REMOVAL .
- Support the transmission.
- Disconnect the gearshift cable (1) from the transmission manual valve lever (3).
- Loosen the bolts holding the shift cable retaining strap (2) to the transmission.
- Remove the shift cable (1) from the transmission.
- Remove the heat shield (1) from the 13-pin connector.
- Disconnect 13-pin plug connector (1). Turn bayonet lock of the adapter plug (2) counterclockwise.
- Remove the 13-pin connector (1) from the transmission.
- Remove the starter motor from the transmission starter pocket and position aside. Refer to STARTER, REMOVAL
.
- With socket wrench on dampener bolt rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction until converter bolts are accessible. Then remove bolts (1) one at a time through the access hole.
- Remove the bolt from the transmission filler tube and position the tube aside.
- Disconnect the transmission vent hose from the transmission.
- Remove transfer case, if equipped.
- Support rear of engine with safety stand or jack.
- Remove the transmission crossmember. Refer to CROSSMEMBER, TRANSMISSION, REMOVAL
.
- Disconnect transmission fluid cooler lines (1) at transmission fittings and discard clips.
- Remove the lower bolts holding the transmission and engine.
- Remove all remaining converter housing bolts (2).
- Carefully work transmission and torque converter assembly rearward off engine block dowels.
- Hold torque converter in place during transmission removal.
- Lower transmission and remove assembly from under the vehicle.
- To remove torque converter, carefully slide torque converter out of the transmission.
