Cover(S), Engine Timing: Removal

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner body. Refer to REMOVAL  .
  3. Drain the cooling system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  4. Remove the upper radiator hose.
  5. If equipped, remove the power steering retaining bolts and place pump aside, without disconnecting the lines.

  6. Remove the coolant temperature sensor wire harness connector (2).
  7. Remove the left heater tube bracket bolt from the rear of the left cylinder head.
  8. Remove the heater tube retaining bolt (1) from the timing cover.
  9. Lift the heater tube (3) out of the water pump and position tube aside for clearance.

  10. Disconnect the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor wire harness connector (4).
  11. Remove the belly pan. Refer to BELLY PAN, REMOVAL .
  12. Remove the under body shield. Refer to SHIELD, REAR MOUNT, REMOVAL .
  13. Remove the cooling fan. Refer to FAN, COOLING, REMOVAL, 5.7/6.4L SINGLE FAN .

  14. Install a piece of cardboard (1) or equivalent to the radiator face to protect the radiator during the repair procedure.
  15. Remove the vibration damper (3). Refer to DAMPER, VIBRATION, REMOVAL  .
  16. Remove the belt tensioner. Refer to TENSIONER, BELT, REMOVAL, 5.7L/6.4L .
  17. Remove the idler pulley. Refer to PULLEY, IDLER, REMOVAL, 5.7L/6.4L .
  18. Remove the lower radiator hose from the water pump.
  19. Remove the generator mounting bolts and set aside without disconnecting any of the electrical connections. Refer to GENERATOR, REMOVAL, 5.7L AND 6.4L .
  20. Remove the A/C compressor mounting bolts and set compressor aside without disconnecting A/C lines. Refer to COMPRESSOR, A/C, REMOVAL .

  21. Remove the five front oil pan to timing cover retaining bolts (1).

  22. Remove the timing cover retaining bolts (1).

  23. Remove the engine timing cover (2) from the engine block (1).
  24. Verify that the engine timing cover slide bushings remain located in the engine timing cover.
  25. If replacing with a new timing cover, transfer any necessary components.
