DTC P0441: EVAP Purge Flow Monitor Failure

NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For circuit identification and wiring diagram, see CHEROKEE wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
NOTE: DTC P0441: EVAP PURGE FLOW MONITOR FAILURE is monitored after engine warms up to more than 170°F (76.7°C) in closed loop mode, at idle for 2 minutes and vacuum more than 9.7 in. Hg, transmission in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T), at least 1/4 tank of fuel and at altitude less than 8000 feet. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) when PCM senses no airflow through Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system. Possible causes are: damaged EVAP canister purge line, defective EVAP purge solenoid, defective EVAP canister, damaged or plugged vacuum hoses.
NOTE: EVAP purge solenoid may also be referred to as EVAP canister purge solenoid or duty cycle EVAP purge solenoid.
  1. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, read DTCs. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP COUNTER is displayed and displayed count is "0", go to step 3). If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP COUNTER is not displayed or displayed count is not "0", go to next step.
  2. At this time, DTC P0441: EVAP PURGE FLOW MONITOR FAILURE does not exist or is an intermittent problem. Using scan tool, read and record FREEZE FRAME data. Road test vehicle under conditions in FREEZE FRAME data, paying particular attention to fault setting conditions such as speed, temperature, load and MAP vacuum. Using scan tool, read DTCs. If DTC P0441: EVAP PURGE FLOW MONITOR FAILURE returns, go to next step. If DTC P0441: EVAP PURGE FLOW MONITOR FAILURE does not return, see INACTIVE DTC CONDITION. Test is complete.
  3. Turn ignition off. Carefully inspect vacuum hoses for proper routing and pinched or plugged hoses from engine to EVAP purge solenoid and to fuel tank. EVAP purge solenoid is located on a bracket mounted to right rear side of engine compartment. A vacuum hose routing schematic can be found on Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) label. VECI label is located in engine compartment, in front of radiator. Repair hoses as necessary. Perform TEST VER-5A3. If hoses are okay, go to next step.
  4. Ensure ignition is off. Remove EVAP purge solenoid. Tap EVAP purge solenoid ports against a clean, solid surface. If foreign material falls out of ports, replace EVAP purge solenoid. Perform TEST VER-5A3. If no foreign material falls out of ports, go to next step.
  5. Inspect fuel line from EVAP purge solenoid to EVAP canister for proper connections, cuts or rips. EVAP canister is located on a bracket inside left frame rail, in front of fuel tank. Repair fuel line as necessary and replace EVAP purge solenoid. Perform TEST VER-5A3. If fuel line is okay, ensure fuel line is clean. Replace EVAP purge solenoid and EVAP canister. Perform TEST VER-5A3.
