Test NTC-2A: Checking Secondary Ignition & Timing

NOTE: Refer to manufacturer's operation manual for instructions in use of engine analyzer and procedure for pattern analysis.
  1. Turn engine off. Connect an engine analyzer to engine. Start engine, and let it idle. If engine will not idle, maintain constant engine speed at more than idle. Set scope to read display or parade pattern. If secondary ignition pattern is not okay, repair indicated component in secondary ignition system and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES  on AB body, or TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION  on all other bodies. If secondary ignition pattern is okay, go to next step.
    NOTE: DO NOT spray inductive pick-up.
  2. On AB body, go to next step. On all other bodies, use a spray bottle to spray ignition cables with water while observing secondary ignition pattern. If pattern changes while spraying water, repair appropriate ignition cable(s) and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If pattern is okay, go to next step.
  3. Momentarily remove each spark plug wire. Observe secondary kilovolt line. If open circuit secondary voltage is not at least 25,000 volts, replace ignition coil and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES  on AB body, or TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION  on all other bodies. If open circuit secondary voltage is at least 25,000 volts, go to next step.
  4. Reinstall spark plug wire. Secondary ignition system is okay at this time. Test passed.
