Test NTC-20A: Checking Park/Neutral Switch
NOTE:
For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For component location and wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Using scan tool, read Park/Neutral (P/N) position switch state. Move gear selector in and out of Park and Reverse while observing scan tool display. If display corresponds with gear selector position, system is functioning properly. Test passed. If display does not correspond with gear selector position, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Place gear selector in Park. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. Inspect connectors and terminals for damage. Repair connectors and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES on AB body, or TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION on all other bodies. If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
- Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and PCM Black connector, P/N position switch sense circuit (Brown/Yellow wire on AB body; Black/Light Blue wire on TJ bodies; Black/White wire on all other bodies). Observe scan tool display while moving gear selector in and out of Park and Reverse. If resistance switches from less than 10 ohms to more than 10 ohms, replace PCM and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES on AB body, or TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION on all other bodies. If resistance does not switch as specified, go to next step.
- Check if resistance always stays less than 10 ohms. if resistance always stays less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in P/N position switch sense circuit (Brown/Yellow wire on AB body; Black/Light Blue wire on TJ bodies; Black/White wire on all other bodies) and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES on AB body, or TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION on all other bodies. if resistance does not always stay less than 10 ohms, go to next step.
- Disconnect PNP switch connector. Inspect connector and terminals for damage. Repair connector and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES on AB body, or TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION on all other bodies. If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
- Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of P/N position switch sense circuit (Brown/Yellow wire on AB body; Black/Light Blue wire on TJ bodies; Black/White wire on all other bodies), between PCM Black connector and P/N position switch connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace P/N position switch and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES on AB body, or TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION on all other bodies. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open P/N position switch sense circuit and perform TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES on AB body, or TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION on all other bodies.
