Diagnostic Test Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 19 other vehicles, including the 2003 Jaguar XKR, 2003 Jaguar XK8, 2003 Jaguar XJR, 2003 Jaguar XJ8, and 2002 Jaguar XKR. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect the appropriate fuel level sensor connector and measure resistance as follows:
    1. XJ Series  - Between fuel level sensor harness connector BT15 terminal No. 4 and ground
    2. XK Series  - Between fuel level sensor harness connector FT4 terminal No. 3 and ground.

Is resistance greater than 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to  3.

  2. Disconnect the appropriate instrument pack connector and measure resistance as follows:
    1. XJ Series  - Between instrument pack harness connector FC25 terminal No. 14 and fuel level sensor harness connector BT15 terminal No. 4.
    2. XK Series  - Between instrument pack harness connector FC26 terminal No. 14 and fuel level sensor harness connector FT4 terminal No. 3.

Is resistance greater than 5 ohms? If yes, repair high resistance between appropriate instrument pack harness connector and appropriate fuel level sensor harness connector. If no, go to next step.

  3. Empty the fuel tank and disconnect the appropriate fuel level sensor connectors and measure resistance between terminals on fuel tank as follows:
    1. XJ Series  - Between fuel tank sensor connectors BT14 terminal No. 3 and BT15 terminal No. 4.
    2. XK Series  - Between fuel tank sensor connectors FT5 terminal No. 4 and BT4 terminal No. 3.

Is resistance 900 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, install a new fuel level sensor.

  4. Fill the fuel tank and measure resistance between terminals on fuel tank as follows:
    1. XJ Series  - Between fuel tank sensor connectors BT14 terminal No. 3 and BT15 terminal No. 4.
    2. XK Series  - Between fuel tank sensor connectors FT5 terminal No. 4 and BT4 terminal No. 3.

Is resistance 80 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, install a new fuel level sensor.

  5. Measure resistance as follows:
    1. XJ Series  - Between instrument pack harness connector FC25 terminal No. 13 and fuel level sensor harness connector BT14 terminal No. 3.
    2. XK Series  - Between instrument pack harness connector FC26 terminal No. 13 and fuel level sensor harness connector FT5 terminal No. 4.

Is resistance greater than 5 ohms? If yes, repair high resistance between appropriate instrument pack harness connector and appropriate fuel level sensor harness connector. If no, install a new instrument cluster.
