DESCRIPTION
This bulletin describes the following procedure for vehicles equipped with Blue Link:
- How to swap ECU for diagnosis only.
- How to replace ECU.
- How to clear Diagnostic code(s) from the Blue Link system.
Applicable Vehicles:
- All vehicles equipped with Blue Link
* IMPORTANT
- Before performing any repair or diagnostic procedures involving the Engine Control Unit (ECU) on a Blue Link Telematics-equipped vehicle, the following procedure MUST be followed to avoid compromising a retail customer's Blue Link account and to prevent unnecessary replacement of the Telematic ECU (TMU).
- This procedure must be performed on BOTH the repair vehicle and the Engine ECU donor vehicle (if swapping the Engine ECU is part of the diagnostic process).
- This procedure must be performed regardless of the status of the Blue Link account.
- This procedure is applicable to both pre-RDR dealer stock and retail customer vehicles.

SWAPPING ECU MODULE FROM A KNOWN GOOD VEHICLE (FOR TESTING PURPOSE ONLY!)
- 1.1 Remove the Negative (-) terminal from the battery, on the repair and Engine ECU donor (vehicle with known good ECU vehicles).NOTE: Do not forget to write down the customer's radio presets.
- 1.2 Locate the fuse powering the Blue Link Telematics Unit (TMU) in the interior fuse box, on both the repair and Engine ECU donor vehicles.NOTE: See the chart below to find the correct Blue Link TMU fuse for the model and year of vehicle.
- 1.3 Remove fuse from both vehicles and set aside.CAUTION: This step is very critical. Do not forget to remove the fuse!
- 1.4 The known good working ECU can now be swapped into the repair vehicle for DIAGNOSIS ONLY. CAUTION: It is very important that when swapping the ECU, it is strictly for DIAGNOSIS ONLY . Any ECU replacement must be made with a new part.
- 1.5 Once diagnosis has been completed, return the donor Engine ECU to the donor vehicle and re-insert the Blue Link TMU fuse on the donor vehicle only. CAUTION: Only reinsert the Blue Link TMU fuse if the ECU is returned to the vehicle it originally came from.
After diagnosis, if the ECU is faulty, then proceed to the section of replacing the ECU with a new part. If the ECU is NOT faulty, then re-install the ECU into the repaired vehicle and re-insert the Blue Link TMU fuse.
- 1.6 Install the negative (-) terminal to the battery and reprogram all the customer's presets.
Lastly, confirm all functions are working properly and there is no MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) illuminated on the instrument cluster. Check radio volume, AM/FM, navigation, Blue Link, etc.
NOTE:
If there is a condition message from Blue Link, follow the instruction below to clear all code(s) from the system.
REPLACING ECU WITH A NEW REPLACEMENT PART
- 2.1 On the repair vehicle, remove the Negative (-) terminal from the battery.NOTE: Do not forget to write down the customer's radio presets.
- 2.2 Locate the Blue Link TMU fuse in the interior fuse box.NOTE: See the chart below to find the correct Blue Link TMU fuse for the model and year of vehicle.
- 2.3 Remove fuse and set aside.CAUTION: This step is very critical. Do not forget to remove the fuse!
- 2.4 Remove the OLD ECU and install the NEW Engine ECU.NOTE: Refer to the shop manual for ECU location and removal procedure.
- 2.5 Install the negative (-) terminal to the battery.
- 2.6 Using a GDS Scan tool, write the correct VIN to the ECU.CAUTION: It is very critical to enter the correct VIN. If the wrong VIN is entered, it can destroy the Blue Link TMU after inserting the fuse and powering up the system.
- 2.7 After Engine ECU repairs are completed, re-insert the Blue Link TMU fuse and reprogram all the customer's presets.
