Inspection Procedures
- CHECK CMPS AND ECM CONNECTORS
- CHECK the CMPS and ECM for poor connection, misplaced, bent, loose or corroded terminals.
Are both connectors good?
Yes: Go to next
No: Repair or replace it.
- CHECK POWER TO CMPS
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position and disconnect CMPS connector.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position and measure voltage between terminal 1 of the CMPS harness connector and chassis ground.
- Specifications: approximately B+
Is voltage within specification?

Yes: Go to next
No: Repair open or short to chassis ground in harness.
- CHECK FOR OPEN IN HARNESS
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position and disconnect ECM connector.
- Measure resistance between terminal 2 of the CMPS harness connector and 72 of the ECM harness connector.
- Measure resistance between terminal 3 of the CMPS harness connector and 30 of the ECM harness connector.

- Specifications: below 1ohm
Does each resistance indicate continuity?
Yes: Go to next
No: Repair open in harness.
- CHECK FOR SHORT TO POWER IN HARNESS
- Turn ignition switch to ON position and keep the ECM and CMPS connectors disconnected.
- Measure the voltage between terminal 2 of the CMPS harness connector and chassis ground.

- Specifications: below 0.5V
Is the voltage within the specification?
Yes: Go to next
No: Repair short to power in harness.
- CHECK FOR SHORT TO GROUND IN HARNESS
- Turn the ignition switch OFF and keep the ECM and CMPS connectors disconnected.
- Measure the resistance between terminal 2 of the CMPS harness connector and chassis ground.
- Measure resistance between terminals 3 and 2 of CMPS harness connector.

- Specifications: infinite
Does each resistance indicate open?
Yes: Go to next
No: Repair short to chassis ground in harness.
- CHECK CMPS SIGNAL
- Connect Hi-Scan (Pro) to data link connector.
- Start engine and monitor CMPS signal with normal operating temperature.
Is signal continuously fluctuating between 0V and 5V?
Yes: Proceed with ECM PROBLEM PROCEDURE .
No: Replace CMPS.
