NOTE: This bulletin updates TSB# 03-40-009 to correct warranty information.

DESCRIPTION

Some 2001 MY XG300 vehicles may experience a 3-4 shift shudder condition. If so, follow TSB 02-40-004 , 3-4 SHIFT SHUDDER - TCM REPROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS, to reprogram the TCM.

Some vehicles may experience a 4-5 shift shudder after reprogramming the TCM to correct the 3-4 shift shudder. If a vehicle experiences a 4-5 shift shudder condition, replace the automatic transaxle assembly and reprogram the TCM using the Hi-Scan Pro according to the service procedure described below.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTE: The following TCM reprogramming procedure and automatic transaxle replacement apply only to vehicles which have been previously reprogrammed with #17 "XG 3.0 AT 3-4 Shift Shudder" according to TSB 02-40-0043-4 , SHIFT SHUDDER - TCM REPROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS. If so, the TCM will have TCM ID "TH8105-C2".

REPLACEMENT OF AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY

Replace the automatic transaxle assembly with the remanufactured automatic transaxle assembly with cushion plate (P/N: 00268-39502).

NOTE: Please refer to the 2001 XG300 Shop Manual, Page TR-72, for the automatic transaxle replacement procedure.

TCM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE

CAUTIONS BEFORE REPROGRAMMING

  1. Conduct reprogramming with the ignition key in the "ON" position.
  2. Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or Hi-Scan Pro during reprogramming.
    WARNING: If reprogramming is interrupted, the manual update procedure must be used.
  3. Do not start the engine during reprogramming.
  4. Do not turn the ignition key off during reprogramming.
  5. When the reprogramming is completed, turn off the ignition key for 20 seconds before starting the engine.

AUTOMATIC UPDATE PROCEDURE

  1. Remove any software cards from the Hi-Scan Pro and insert reprogramming card into the Hi-Scan Pro top slot. (Red 32MB Card) (Fig 1 )
  2. Connect the reprogramming adapter to the Hi-Scan Pro. (Fig 1 )
  3. Connect the red 10 pin connector to the reprogramming adapter. (Fig 1 )
  4. Connect power cable to the Hi-Scan Pro from the cigarette power adapter. (Fig 1 )
  5. Insert the power cable from the reprogramming adapter into the cigarette power adapter. (Fig 1 )

  6. Connect the cigarette power adapter into the vehicle cigarette power socket. (Fig 2 )
  7. Connect the red 10 pin connector to the white reprogramming connector at the lower crash pad next to the Data Link Connector (DLC). (Fig 2 )

  8. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
  9. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON.
  10. Select option "29. XG 300 4-5 SHUDDER & REAR O2 SENSOR" and press ENTER. (Fig 3 )

  11. Select option "01. XG 300 AT 4-5 SHUDDER [AUTO MODE]" and press ENTER. (Fig 4 )

  12. Enter "1229" as the password for automatic update and press ENTER. (Fig 5 )

  13. The Hi-Scan Pro will establish communication. (Fig 6 )

  14. The Hi-Scan Pro detects the current ECM and TCM IDs, then displays them for about 1 second. (Fig 7 )

  15. The Hi-Scan Pro will download the new ECM and TCM programs at the same time (Fig 8 ).

    NOTE: If the Hi-Scan Pro does not download the program after trying several times, use the Manual Update Procedure following this section.
    WARNING: Do not interrupt the reprogramming at any time. The ECM and TCM may be rendered inoperative if the program does not download completely.
  16. When the "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED!" message is displayed (Fig 9 ), the ECM and TCM reprogramming process is complete. Press ENTER and turn off the Hi-Scan Pro and turn the ignition key to the off position for 20 seconds.

  17. Start the engine to check for proper operation.

MANUAL UPDATE PROCEDURE

NOTE:
  • In the event that option "01. XG 300 AT 4-5 SHUDDER [AUTO MODE]" fails to download the new TCM program, option "02. XG 300 AT 4-5 SHUDDER [ERROR MODE]" must be used.
  • Confirm all connections are established as shown in the"AUTOMATIC UPDATE PROCEDURE"  before continuing.
  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
  2. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON.
  3. Select option "29. XG 300 4-5 SHUDDER & REAR O2 SENSOR" and press ENTER. (Fig 3 )
  4. Select option "02. XG 300 AT 4-5 SHUDDER [ERROR MODE]" and press ENTER. (Fig 10 )

  5. Choose the vehicle type (Fig 11 ) which is correct for your vehicle. (USA: 01. XG 300 AT - IMMO)

  6. Enter the correct password for the manual update mode (Fig 12 ) which is correct for your vehicle after identifying the vehicle specification and by referring to the chart below (MANUAL UPDATE MODE PASSWORDS  ). Then press ENTER.

    WARNING: Be sure to input the correct password. If an incorrect password is selected, the correct ECM and TCM programs will not be downloaded.
  7. The Hi-Scan Pro will establish communication. (Fig 6 )
    NOTE: Once the password is entered and accepted, the rest of the procedure is exactly the same as the automatic update procedure.
  8. The Hi-Scan Pro will reprogram the ECM and TCM at the same time. (Fig 8 )
    WARNING: Do not interrupt the reprogramming at any time. The ECM and TCM may be rendered inoperative if the program does not download completely.
  9. The Hi-Scan Pro checks the ECM and TCM IDs to confirm reprogramming is complete. Press ENTER and turn off the Hi-Scan Pro and turn the ignition key to the off position for 20 seconds. (Fig 9 )
    NOTE: Confirm the Hi-Scan Pro displays the new ECM and TCM IDs:

  10. Start the engine to check for proper operation.

EXPLANATION OF ERROR MESSAGE

  1. "INVALID PASSWORD": Please enter the exact password again.
  2. "REPROGRAMMING ERROR, PLEASE WAIT FOR RETRY": An error occurred during reprogramming, the Hi-Scan Pro will retry reprogramming automatically.
  3. "ALREADY REPROGRAMMED" or "INCORRECT TARGET ID": The reprogramming has previously been done on this vehicle or the ECM/TCM is not the type subject to the reprogramming procedure.
  4. "REPROGRAM ERROR, PLEASE CHECK THE SYSTEM": In this case, you must reprogram manually after selecting the menu option "02. XG 300 AT 4-5 SHUDDER [ERROR MODE]".
