Test Procedures
- Turn ignition on. Connect scan tool to data link connector and verify DTC P0501 is set. Test drive vehicle and ensure speedometer operates properly. On Elantra, if speedometer operates properly, go to next step. On Tiburon, if speedometer operates properly, go to step 6 . On Elantra, if speedometer does not operate properly, repair speedometer cable and/or cable drive gear. On Tiburon, if speedometer does not operate properly, check VSS operation. Replace as necessary. On all models, when repairs are completed, clear DTC and verify VSS operation.
- Turn ignition on and observe instrument cluster indicators. If all instrument cluster indicators operate properly, go to next step. If instrument cluster indicators do not operate properly, repair ground circuit between instrument cluster and ground connection located behind left front kick panel. When repairs are completed, clear DTC and verify VSS operation.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect specified instrument cluster I01-1, I01-2, I01-3, I04-2 and I04-3 connectors. See IDENTIFYING INSTRUMENT CLUSTER VSS TESTING TERMINALS
table. Measure resistance in VSS signal circuit between ground and specified instrument cluster harness connector terminal. On all models, if resistance is more than 50 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 50 ohms, repair short to ground in suspect circuit between instrument cluster and ECM connector terminal No. 42. When repairs are completed, clear DTC and verify system VSS operation.IDENTIFYING INSTRUMENT CLUSTER VSS TESTING TERMINALS

(2) Connector I01-1 (GLS model) or I04-1 (GL model) is located at lower left side of instrument cluster. (3) Instrument cluster ground circuit. (4) Connector I01-1 is located at right side of instrument cluster. Connector I01-2 is located at right side of instrument cluster. - Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM 88-pin connector. Using a jumper wire, connect ECM connector terminal No. 42 (Yellow/Black wire) to ground. Measure resistance between ground and specified instrument cluster harness connector terminal. See IDENTIFYING INSTRUMENT CLUSTER VSS TESTING TERMINALS table. On all models, if resistance is one ohm or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair open in suspect circuit between instrument cluster and ECM. When repairs are completed, clear DTC and verify VSS system operation.
- On Elantra, disconnect instrument cluster connector I01-1 (GLS model) or I04-1 (GL model). Rotate speedometer cable and check for toggling continuity between instrument cluster VSS signal and ground terminals. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Continuity should toggle on and off 4 times for every speedometer rotation. If continuity toggles as specified, verify ECM connector terminals are clean and tight. If ECM connector is okay, replace VSS with a known-good component. Clear DTC and verify system operation. If problem persists, replace ECM. If continuity does not toggle as specified, replace VSS. When repairs are completed, clear DTC and verify system operation.
Disconnect instrument cluster I01-1 connector. Measure resistance in VSS signal circuit between ground and instrument cluster I01-1 connector terminal No. 9 (Yellow/Black wire). If resistance is more than 50 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 50 ohms, repair short to ground in suspect circuit between instrument cluster, TCM 16-pin connector terminal No 16 (Yellow/White wire), ECM connector terminal No. 42 and/or VSS connector terminal No. 2 (Yellow/Black wire). When repairs are completed, clear DTC and verify system VSS operation.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM 88-pin connector. Using a jumper wire, connect ECM connector terminal No. 42 (Yellow/Black wire) to ground. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster I01-1 connector terminal No. 9. If resistance is one ohm or less, verify ECM connector terminals are clean and tight. If ECM connector is okay, replace VSS with a known-good component. Clear DTC and verify system operation. If problem persists, replace ECM. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair open in circuit between instrument cluster and ECM. When repairs are completed, clear DTC and verify VSS system operation.
