Test Procedures
- Turn ignition on. Connect scan tool to data link connector and check for DTCs. Verify DTC P0130 or P0136 is set. If only DTC P0130 or P0136 is set, go to next step. If any other DTC is set, repair that DTC first. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) IDENTIFICATION . If DTCs P0130 and P0136 are not present, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
- Start engine and allow to idle at normal operating temperature. Using scan tool, monitor suspect HO2S output voltage at various engine speeds. If voltage is 5.0 volts or 12.0 volts, go to next step. If voltage is approximately 450 mV (0.45 volts) and does not vary, go to step 4 . If voltage is zero volts, go to step 6 . If voltage varies and is always less than 500 mV (0.5 volt - lean), go to step 7 . If voltage varies and is always more than 500 mV (0.5 volt - rich), go to step 8 . If voltage varies between 0 and 900 mV (0-0.9 volt), go to step 9 .
- If DTC P0130 is set and voltage is either 5.0 volts or 12 volts, repair short to voltage in circuit between front HO2S connector terminal No. 1 and ECM 88-pin connector terminal No. 12. If DTC P0136 is set and voltage is either 5.0 volts or 12.0 volts, repair short to voltage in Green wire between rear HO2S connector terminal No. 1 and ECM 88-pin connector terminal No. 39. When repairs are completed, clear DTCs and verify HO2S operation.
- If voltage is approximately 450 mV (0.45 volt) and does not vary, allow engine to idle. Backprobe between suspect HO2S connector terminals No. 1 and 2, and measure voltage. If voltage changes from less than 500 mV (0.5 volt) to more than 500 mV (0.5 volt), go to next step. If voltage does not change as specified, replace suspect HO2S. When repairs are completed, clear DTCs and verify HO2S operation.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect front HO2S 4-pin connector if DTC P0130 is set, or rear HO2S 4-pin connector if DTC P0136 is set. Disconnect ECM 88-pin connector. Using a jumper wire, connect suspect HO2S harness connector terminal No. 1 to ground. Measure resistance between ground and ECM connector terminal No. 12 for front HO2S or terminal No. 39 for rear HO2S. If resistance is one ohm or less, ensure ECM connector terminals are clean and tight. If ECM connector is okay, replace suspect HO2S. Clear DTCs and verify HO2S operation. If problem is still present, replace ECM. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair open or cause of high resistance in suspect circuit. When repairs are completed, clear DTCs and verify HO2S operation.
- Disconnect suspect HO2S 4-pin connector and read sensor voltage on scan tool. If voltage is approximately 450 mV (.45 volt), replace suspect HO2S. If voltage is not approximately 450 mV (0.45 volt) for front HO2S, repair short to ground in White wire between HO2S connector terminal No. 1 and ECM connector terminal No. 12. If voltage is not approximately 450 mV (0.45 volt) for rear HO2S, repair short to ground in Green/White wire between HO2S connector terminal No. 1 and ECM connector terminal No. 39. When repairs are completed, clear DTCs and verify HO2S operation.
- If voltage varies and is always less than 500 mV (0.5 volt - lean), check air inlet downstream of Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor for leaks or damage. Check exhaust manifold for cracks or leaks. If leaks or damage are found, replace HO2S and perform repairs as necessary. If no leaks or damage is found, go to next step. When repairs are completed, clear DTCs and verify HO2S operation.
- Perform fuel pressure inspection. See FUEL PRESSURE TEST under FUEL SYSTEM in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. If fuel pressure is within specification and no pressure leak-down is detected, go to next step. If fuel pressure is not as specified, repair fuel system as necessary. When repairs are completed, clear DTCs and verify HO2S operation.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ignition coil connector. While cranking engine, measure voltage drop across negative battery cable and cable attachment located on engine. If voltage drop is less than 500mV (0.5 volt), go to next step. If voltage drop is more than 500 mV (0.5 volt), replace negative battery cable. When repairs are completed, clear DTCs and verify HO2S operation.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Measure resistance between generator housing and engine ground connection. If resistance is one ohm or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than one ohm, clean mating surfaces of generator housing and engine. When repairs are completed, clear DTCs and verify HO2S operation.
- If MIL is illuminating intermittently and DTC P0130 or P0136 is set, problem is most likely a poor ground circuit. Clean negative battery terminal and engine ground. In addition, clean mating surfaces of generator housing and engine. If MIL was illuminated and DTC P0130 or P0136 is set, replace suspect HO2S. When repairs are completed, clear DTCs and verify HO2S operation.
