Test Procedures
NOTE:
It is recommended that vehicle cool down overnight before starting IAT sensor test procedure.
- Connect scan tool to data link connector. Turn ignition on and verify DTC P0112 or P0113 is set. If either DTC is set, go to next step. If neither DTC is set, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
- Ensure engine is cooled to ambient air temperature. Measure ambient air temperature and turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read IAT sensor temperature. If IAT sensor temperature and ambient air temperature are not about the same, go to next step. If IAT sensor temperature and ambient air temperature are about the same, no problem is indicated at this time. Problem is intermittent or was repaired and DTCs were not cleared. Clear DTCs and ensure IAT sensor is operating properly.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect IAT 2-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and IAT connector terminal No. 1 (Pink wire on Elantra; Blue/Black wire on Tiburon). If DTC P0112 is set and zero volts are present, go to next step. If DTC P0112 is set and 4.5-5.0 volts are present, go to step 5 . If DTC P0113 is set and zero volts are present, go to step 6 . If DTC P0113 is set and 4.5-5.0 volts are present, replace IAT sensor. When repairs are completed, clear DTCs and verify MAF sensor operation.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM 88-pin harness connector. Using a jumper wire, connect IAT harness connector terminal No. 1 (Green/Black wire on Elantra; Pink/Black wire on Tiburon) to ground. Measure resistance between ground and ECM connector terminal No. 77. If resistance is one ohm or less, remove jumper wire and go to next step. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair open in circuit between IAT sensor and ECM. When repairs are completed, clear DTCs and verify IAT operation.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect IAT harness connector and ECM 88-pin harness connector. Using a jumper wire, ground IAT harness connector terminal No. 2 (Pink wire on Elantra; White/Black wire on Tiburon). Measure resistance between ground and ECM connector terminal No. 71. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair open between IAT and ECM. If resistance is one ohm or less, ensure ECM connector terminals are clean and tight. If connector terminals are okay, replace IAT sensor with a known-good component. Clear DTCs and verify IAT sensor operation. If problem still exists, replace ECM. When repairs are completed, clear DTCs and verify IAT operation.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect IAT harness connector and ECM 88-pin harness connector. Check for continuity between ground and IAT sensor connector terminal No. 1 (Green/Black wire on Elantra; Pink/Black wire on Tiburon). If continuity does not exist, ensure ECM connector terminals are clean and tight. If connector terminals are okay, replace ECM. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in circuit between IAT sensor and ECM connectors. When repairs are completed, clear DTCs and verify IAT operation.
