Safety Campaign #003 - Cruise Control Modification (93-01-005)

CONDITION

In laboratory tests Hyundai has been able to induce a malfunction in the microprocessor of the cruise control unit. This only occurs in vehicles equipped with the Excel Hi-Power radio with cassette (H340). It was found that the cruise control switch is in the "ON" position and the car's electrical system experiences a voltage drop, the cruise control may operate erratically when placed in the "set" mode. We have also found that the movement of the cruise control switch to the "OFF" position cancels the malfunction. Application of the brake pedal alone will not cancel the malfunction. This situation cannot occur if the cruise control is in the "OFF" position. Therefore, the cruise control should be switched to the "OFF" position until the electronic control module is replaced.

CORRECTION

Replacement of the electronic control module of the Genuine Hyundai Cruise Control whether or not the vehicle is equipped with the Hi-Power radio with cassette.

VEHICLE AFFECTED

1986 to 1989 model year Excel with a Genuine Hyundai Cruise Control.

INSPECTION

This procedure will help you determine if the customer's vehicle is equipped with a Genuine Hyundai Cruise Control system.

1. Check the cruise control stalk on the steering column to see if it matches the one shown in Fig. Fig 1 . The Genuine Hyundai Cruise Control is mounted on the right side of the steering column, and controls wiper/washer functions as well as cruise control. If the cruise control isn't a Genuine Hyundai Cruise Control system, inform your customer that it isn't affected by the campaign.

2. If the stalk matches the one shown in Fig. Fig 1 , inspect the vacuum actuator, located under the instrument panel above the brake pedal. See Fig 2 . You'll have to stick your head under the instrument panel to see this component. If the vacuum actuator looks like the one shown in Fig. Fig 2 . you will need to replace the cruise control module. If the vacuum actuator doesn't match, it's not a Genuine Hyundai system, and is not included in this campaign.

3. If the vehicle is equipped with a Genuine Hyundai Cruise Control system, check the 16th digit on the plate under the hood on the cowl for a punch mark to make sure the module hasn't already been replaced by another dealership.

REPLACEMENT

1. Locate the cruise control module under the dashboard. See Fig. 3.

2. Remove the attachment hardware.
3. Detach the module from the cruise control master harness. Fill out the campaign tag, attach it to the module as shown in Fig. 4, and hold the module in your parts department until you receive the Request for Return to the Warranty Technical Center.

4. Connect the new module to the cruise control master harness.
5. Using the original hardware, mount the replacement module in the same position as the old module.
6. Center punch the 16th digit of the VIN on the VIN plate under the hood (above the next-to-the-last digit in the VIN). The plate is on the cowl, driver's side.
