ISSUE & TIP

If you are diagnosing a 1986-89 Honda Accord that appears to have a base gasket or other vacuum leak that is causing the engine to run very lean, be sure to check the PCV valve before making other repairs. The PCV valve has a plunger made of a synthetic material that may disintegrate and disappear over time.

The missing plunger leans out the mixture. Pinch off the vacuum hose to the PCV to verify your diagnosis.
