Diagnosis & Repair
- Connect scan tool to DLC. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature. Turn all accessories off. Select ECT sensor parameter on scan tool. If cooling fan turns ON when ECT temperature reaches 208°F (97.5°C), go to next step. If cooling fan does not turn ON at specified temperature, go to step 7).
- If cooling fan turns OFF when ECT temperature drops to 199°F (92.5°C), check for an intermittent problem. See TESTS W/O CODES article. If cooling fan does not turn OFF at specified temperature, go to next step.
- Ensure ECT temperature is below 199°F (92.5°C). Disconnect cooling fan relay, located in engine compartment relay/fuse box. If cooling fan turns OFF, go to next step. If cooling fan does not turn OFF, go to step 5).
- Using a test light connected to battery positive terminal, probe cooling fan relay connector terminal No. 2 (Blue wire). If test light comes on, go to step 6). If test light does not come on, replace cooling fan relay. Retest system.
- Repair Blue/Red wire between cooling fan relay and cooling fan motor for short to power. Retest system.
- Check Blue wire between PCM and cooling fan relay for short to ground. Repair as necessary. If wire is okay, replace PCM. Retest system.
- With engine running, ensure ECT temperature is above 208°F (97.5°C). Disconnect cooling fan relay. Using a test light connected to battery positive, probe cooling fan relay connector terminal No. 2 (Blue wire). If test light comes on, go to next step. If test light does not come on, go to step 11).
- Using a test light connected to ground, probe cooling fan relay connector terminal No. 1 (Black/White wire). If test light comes on, go to next step. If test light does not come on, repair open in Black/White wire between fuse block and cooling fan relay.
- Using a test light connected to ground, probe cooling fan relay connector terminal No. 4 (Black/Blue wire). If test light comes on, go to next step. If test light does not come on, repair open in Black/Blue wire between cooling fan relay and fuse block.
- Connect a fused jumper wire between cooling fan relay connector terminals No. 3 (Black/Blue wire) and No. 4 (Blue/Red wire). If cooling fan motor turns on, replace cooling fan relay. If cooling fan motor does not turn on, go to step 12).
- Check Blue wire between PCM and cooling fan relay for open. Repair as necessary. If wire is okay, replace PCM. Retest system.
- Check Blue/Red wire between cooling fan relay and cooling fan motor for open. Repair as necessary. If wire is okay, go to next step.
- Check for open ground circuit (Black wire) between cooling fan motor and chassis. Repair as necessary. If ground is okay, replace cooling fan motor. Retest system.
