Pinpoint Test An: Stability Control Sensor Initialization Fault

  1. Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    The ABS module monitors various inputs and compares the values to what should be expected. If the values received are out of range or not what is expected, the ABS module sets a DTC. When a new ABS module or RCM is installed, the stability control sensors in the RCM must be initialized. This is accomplished using a diagnostic scan tool to run the ABS Calibration routine.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    ABS C0061:54 Lateral Acceleration Sensor: Missing Calibration Sets when the ABS module detects the stability sensors in the RCM have not been calibrated or the calibration has been lost.
    ABS C0062:54 Longitudinal Acceleration Sensor: Missing Calibration Sets when the ABS module detects the stability sensors in the RCM have not been calibrated or the calibration has been lost.
    ABS C006A:95 Multi-axis Acceleration Sensor: Incorrect Assembly The sensor cluster sends an identification number to the ABS module when the ABS Calibration routine is carried out. This identification number is then shared between the modules when the ignition is set to ON. This DTC sets when the sensor cluster identification number does not match the last valid identification number and the new valid sensor identification number.

    Possible Causes 

    • ABS Calibration routine not carried out
    • RCM concern
    • EBB unit

  2. AN1 CALIBRATE THE ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM)

    NOTE: The vehicle must be on level ground and at a complete standstill during ABS Calibration. Any vehicle movement results in a failed calibration.

    NOTE: The IMU Calibration routine is also known as the IVD Initialization routine.
    NOTE: The vehicle must be on level ground and at a complete standstill during IMU Calibration. Any vehicle movement results in a failed calibration.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the ABS Calibration routine, Follow the diagnostic scan tool instructions.

    Does the sensor calibration routine pass successfully? 

    Yes  The condition causing the concern is no longer present. The concern was most likely caused by a failed sensor calibration or an non-calibrated sensor.
    No  GO to  AN2
  3. AN2 VERIFY BATTERY STATE OF CHARGE

    • Using a multi-meter or similar tool, verify the battery voltage is greater than 10 volts.-Measure:

    Is the battery voltage greater than 10 volts? 

    Yes  GO to  AN3
    No  DIAGNOSE the battery low voltage condition. REFER to: CHARGING SYSTEM - 1.5L ECOBOOST (132KW 180PS) - I3 (Y1) . REFER to: CHARGING SYSTEM - 2.0L ECOBOOST (177KW 240PS) - MI4 . REFER to: Charging System - 2.5L Duratec - Hybrid (121kW/164PS) (BG) .
  4. AN3 CHECK THE RCM (RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE) MOUNTING SURFACE AND ELECTRICAL GROUNDING

    WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect RCM module connector C310A.

    • Disconnect RCM module connector C310B.

    • Inspect the RCM mounting surface for damage, corrosion, dirt and other irregularities.

    Is the RCM installed correctly and the mounting surface clean and free from damage? 

    Yes  GO to  AN4
    No  CLEAR or REPAIR the RCM mounting surface as necessary. CORRECTLY INSTALL the RCM and TIGHTEN the fasteners to the correct toque specification. GO to  AN4
  5. AN4 VERIFY MODULE NETWORK COMMUNICATION

    • Install the RCM. REFER to: Airbag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) .

      • Make sure the RCM is installed in the correct direction (arrow to front of vehicle) and make sure all fasteners are tighten to specifications.

    • Connect RCM module connector C310A. Make sure the connector seats and latches correctly.

    • Connect RCM module connector C310B. Make sure the connector seats and latches correctly.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Press the Read Vehicle Information button to view the results of the modules communicating on the network.

    • Press Read Vehicle Information button to retrieve DTC's from the vehicle.
      NOTE: DTC's may be displayed from previous diagnostic actions.

    • Read the vehicle information.

    Do the RCM, PCM, BCM, and ABS module all pass the Network Test? 

    Yes  GO to  AN5
    No  REFER to: Communications Network in the appropriate Module Communications Network article.
  6. AN5 CHECK FOR RCM (RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE) DTCS

    • Carry out the RCM self-test.

    Are there any DTC's present in the RCM ' 

    Yes  DIAGNOSE the RCM DTC's. REFER to: RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) .
    No  GO to  AN6
  7. AN6 CARRY OUT THE STABILITY CONTROL SENSOR CALIBRATION ROUTINE

    NOTE: The vehicle must be on level ground and at a complete standstill during ABS Calibration. Any vehicle movement results in a failed calibration.

    • Connect ABS module connector C135. Make sure the connector seats and latches correctly.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the ABS Calibration routine, Follow the diagnostic scan tool instructions.

    Does the sensor calibration routine pass successfully? 

    Yes  GO to  AN7
    No  GO to  AN8
  8. AN7 CHECK THE ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM) MODULE LONGITUDINAL ACCELERATION (LONG_ACCEL) PID (PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION)

    NOTE: The LONG_ACCEL PID must be between -0.17g and 0.17g for the ABS module to store a reading and clear DTC C0062:54. A reading greater than 0.17g or less than -0.17g indicates the vehicle is not level or may be overloaded.

    • Position the vehicle on a flat, level surface. Make sure the vehicle has no payload or passengers.

    • Access the ABS and monitor the LONG_ACCL (g) PID.

    • Access the ABS and monitor the LAT_ACCL_C (g) PID.

    Is the PID reading between -0.17g and 0.17g? 

    Yes  GO to  AN10
    No  GO to  AN8
  9. AN8 VERIFY ALL WIRING CONNECTIONS

    WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Wait one minute.

    • Disconnect ABS module connector C135.

    • Disconnect RCM connector C310A.

    • Disconnect RCM module connector C310B.

    • Using a good light source, inspect all disconnected electrical connectors for the following:

      • Corrosion - install new connector or terminal and clean the module pins
      • Damaged or bent pins - install new terminals or pins
      • Pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
      • Spread terminals - install new terminals as necessary

    Are the connectors free of corrosion, damaged pins, bent pins, pushed-out pins and spread terminals? 

    Yes  GO to  AN9
    No  REPAIR the connector or terminals. Refer to Connector Repair Procedures for schematic and connector information.
  10. AN9 CHECK FOR CORRECT RCM (RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION

    • Connect RCM connector C310A. Make sure the connector seats and latches correctly.

    • Connect RCM connector C310B. Make sure the connector seats and latches correctly.

    • Connect ABS module connector C135. Make sure the connector seats and latches correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new RCM. REFER to: RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  11. AN10 RECHECK FOR THE ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM) MODULE DTC (DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE)

    • Ignition ON.

    • Clear the ABS module DTC's.

    • Put the ABS module in sleep mode by performing the following steps:

      • With ALL doors closed, set the ignition from ON to OFF.
      • Disconnect the diagnostic scan tool.
      • Open the door, exit the vehicle and close the door.
      • Wait a minimum of 90 seconds for the ABS module to enter sleep mode.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Carry out the ABS module self-test.

    Are any of the DTC's listed in the DTC Fault Trigger Conditions table present and active in the ABS module? 

    Yes  GO to  AN11
    No  The system is operating correctly. The concern may have been caused by; an incomplete stability control sensor calibration routine, a dirty RCM ground connection or an incorrectly installed RCM.
  12. AN11 VERIFY ALL WIRING CONNECTIONS

    WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.

    • Put the ABS module in sleep mode by performing the following steps:

      • With ALL doors closed, set the ignition from ON to OFF.

      • Disconnect the diagnostic scan tool.

      • Open the door, exit the vehicle and close the door.

      • Wait a minimum of 90 seconds for the ABS module to enter sleep mode.

    • Wait one minute.

    • Disconnect ABS module connector C135.

    • Disconnect RCM connector C310A.

    • Disconnect RCM connector C310B.

    • Using a good light source, inspect all disconnected electrical connectors for the following:

      • Corrosion - install new connector or terminal and clean the module pins
      • Damaged or bent pins - install new terminals or pins
      • Pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
      • Spread terminals - install new terminals as necessary

    Are the connectors free of corrosion, damaged pins, bent pins, pushed-out pins and spread terminals? 

    Yes  GO to  AN12
    No  REPAIR the connector or terminals. Refer to Connector Repair Procedures for schematic and connector information.
  13. AN12 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM) MODULE OPERATION

    • Put the ABS module in sleep mode by performing the following steps:

      • With ALL doors closed, set the ignition from ON to OFF.

      • Disconnect the diagnostic scan tool.

      • Open the door, exit the vehicle and close the door.

      • Wait a minimum of 90 seconds for the ABS module to enter sleep mode.

    • Connect ABS module connector C135. Make sure the connector seats and latches correctly.

    • Connect RCM connector C310A. Make sure the connector seats and latches correctly.

    • Connect RCM connector C310B. Make sure the connector seats and latches correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK HCU and ABS module are a single assembly known as the EBB unit. The OASIS for any service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new EBB unit (HCU and ABS module assembly). REFER to: ELECTRIC BRAKE BOOSTER (EBB) .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
