Occupant Classification System (OCS) Sensor: Removal

WARNING: The following procedure prescribes critical repair steps required for correct restraint system operation during a crash. Follow all notes and steps carefully. Failure to follow step instructions may result in incorrect operation of the restraint system and increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
NOTE: To prevent system failure, carry out the OCS reset when a front passenger seat cushion assembly is removed, a new seat cushion trim cover is installed or an OCS service kit is installed. Use a diagnostic scan tool to carry out the OCS reset command.
NOTE: The cushion heater mat on a front outboard passenger seat is not serviced separately. If a new cushion heater mat is needed on the front passenger seat, install an OCS service kit equipped with a heater mat. Failure to follow this instruction may result in incorrect operation of the OCS.
NOTE: The OCS components (seat cushion foam and trim cover, heater mat, plastic carrier, and OCS bladder with OCSM) are calibrated to each other and serviced as an assembly. The OCS service kit components are not to be installed separately. If a new OCS or OCS components are needed, a new OCS service kit must be installed. A new passenger seat cushion cover can be installed separately.
NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

All seats 

  1. WARNING: Before beginning any service procedure in this article, refer to HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS in Service Information/General Information. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

  2. Raise the front passenger seat to its highest point of travel.

    Remove the front passenger seat. Refer to: Front Seat .

  4. Remove the front seat side shield screws.

    Vehicles with manual seats 

    • Release the tab and remove the recline handle cover.

    • Remove the clip and the height adjust handle cover.

  6. Remove the front seat side shield.

    1. Lift up on the rear of the side shield and pull outward.
    2. Pull the side shield out to clear the height adjust handle.
    3. Push the side shield forward.

    Vehicles with power seats 

  7. Release the retainers and remove the front seat recline handle cover.

  8. Remove the front seat side shield.

    1. Lift up on the rear of the side shield and pull outward.
    2. Push the side shield forward.
    3. Disconnect the electrical connector.

    All vehicles 

  9. Detach the electrical connector retainer(s) and position the wiring harness(es) aside.

  10. Detach the backrest cover straps and position the backrest cover aside.

  11. Detach the cushion cover rear J-clips.

  12. Disconnect the OCS sensor and cushion heated seat mat (if equipped) electrical connector(s).

    1. On both sides. Detach the cushion cover J-clips.
    2. Detach the cushion cover J-clip.

  14. NOTE: When equipped with an OCS service kit, the OCS is adhered to the bottom of the front seat cushion foam. This requires the cushion cover, foam and OCS to be positioned aside as an assembly.

    Lift the cushion foam. If the cushion foam and OCS are adhered together, then the OCS is a service kit. If nothing is adhered together, then the OCS is OE (original equipment).

  15. If equipped with an OE OCS. Remove the cushion foam and cover as an assembly.

    1. Remove the OCS pin-type retainers.
    2. Lift the OCS bladder off the seat cushion frame.

  17. Remove the OCSM bracket screw.

  18. NOTE: For correct installation, note the location of the OCS hose and heater mat pigtail (if equipped) as it passes through the seat springs.

    Route out the OCS hose, sensor, sensor bracket and heated seat cushion mat wiring pigtail (if equipped) from between the seat cushion support wires and remove the OCS.

  19. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new OCS or seat track.
    NOTE: Follow the unique instructions or graphic for this step in the installation.

    Bend the tab up and slide the OCS sensor off the bracket. Use the General Equipment: Flat Headed Screw Driver

  20. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new OCS.

    Position the rear portion of the seat cushion cover from the foam.

    Remove the front seat cushion cover.

    1. Invert the front seat cushion cover.
    2. Remove the hog rings.
