Pinpoint Test S: Stability Control Sensor Signal Failure Faults

  1. Refer to HORN/CIGAR LIGHTER for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    The RCM measures vehicle yaw rate, lateral acceleration, longitudinal acceleration and roll rate, then sends the information to the ABS module over a private HS-CAN. This private HS-CAN is used only for communication between the RCM and the ABS module. The yaw rate sensor, lateral, longitudinal accelerometers and roll rate sensor are contained in the RCM.

    A failure of the private HS-CAN, RCM or the internal sensors causes the ABS module to set one or more DTC's. An incorrectly installed RCM sends invalid information to the ABS module, which also causes a DTC to set.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    ABS C0061:28 Lateral Acceleration Sensor: Signal Bias Level Out Of Range/Zero Adjustment Failure Sets when the ABS module detects the sensor signal is greater than the programmed maximum plausible sensor signal.
    ABS C0061:64 Lateral Acceleration Sensor: Signal Plausibility Failure Sets when the ABS module detects the sensor signal does not match the other stability sensor signals.
    ABS C0062:28 Longitudinal Acceleration Sensor: Signal Bias Level Out Of Range/Zero Adjustment Failure Sets when the ABS module detects the sensor signal is greater than the programmed maximum plausible sensor signal.
    ABS C0062:64 Longitudinal Acceleration Sensor: Signal Plausibility Failure Sets when the ABS module detects the sensor signal does not match the other stability sensor signals.
    ABS C0063:28 Yaw Rate Sensor: Signal Bias Level Out Of Range/Zero Adjustment Failure Sets when the ABS module detects the sensor signal is greater than the programmed maximum plausible sensor signal.
    ABS C0063:64 Yaw Rate Sensor: Signal Plausibility Failure Sets when the ABS module detects the sensor signal does not match the other stability sensor signals.
    ABS C0064:28 Roll Rate Sensor: Signal Bias Level Out Of Range/Zero Adjustment Failure Sets when the ABS module detects the sensor signal is greater than the programmed maximum plausible sensor signal.
    ABS C0064:64 Roll Rate Sensor: Signal Plausibility Failure Sets when the ABS module detects the sensor signal does not match the other stability sensor signals.
    ABS U0151:00 Lost Communication With Restraints Control Module: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when the ABS module does not receive any messages from the RCM within the allowed time.

    Possible Sources 

    • Wheels or tires
    • Wiring, terminals or connectors
    • RCM
    • ABS Module

    NOTE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may cause damage to the connector.
  2. S1 CHECK THE WHEELS AND TIRES

    • Inspect the wheels and tires for any damage or excessive wear.

    • Verify all wheels and tires are the same size and match the size indicated on the VC label.

    • Verify the inflation pressure of all 4 tires is correct as indicated on the VC label.

    Are the wheels and tires OK? 

    Yes  GO to  S2.
    No  INSTALL the correct size wheel or tire or ADJUST tire pressure as necessary.
  3. S2 CHECK THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK

    • Ignition ON.

    • Retrieve DTC's from the vehicle.
      NOTE: DTC's may be displayed from previous diagnostic actions.

    Does the RCM pass the Network Test? 

    Yes  GO to  S3
    No 
  4. S3 RETRIEVE ALL DTC (DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE) S FROM THE RCM (RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE)

    • Carry out the RCM self-test.

    Are any DTC's present? 

    Yes  DIAGNOSE the RCMDTC's first REFER to: Airbag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS)
     
    No  GO to  S4
  5. S4 CHECK THE ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM) MODULE DTC (DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE) S

    • Ignition ON.

    • Carry out the ABS self-test.

    Is DTC U0151:xx or U0452:xx present and active in the ABS module? 

    Yes  GO to  S6
    No  GO to  S5
  6. S5 CHECK THE RCM (RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE) INSTALLATION AND MOUNTING SURFACE

    WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Wait one minute.

    • Disconnect RCM _A connector C310A..

    • Disconnect RCM _B connector C310B..

    • Inspect the RCM mounting surface for damage, corrosion or dirt.

    Is the RCM installed correctly and is the mounting surface clean and free from damage? 

    Yes  GO to  S6
    No  CLEAN or REPAIR the mounting surface or INSTALL a new RCM as necessary REFER to: Restraints Control Module (RCM)
    .
  7. S6 VERIFY STABILITY CONTROL SENSOR CALIBRATION

    • Connect RCM _A connector C310A. Make sure the connector seats and latches correctly..

    • Connect RCM _B connector C310B. Make sure the connector seats and latches correctly..

    • Ignition ON.

    NOTE: The IMU Calibration routine is also known as the IVD Initialization routine.
    NOTE: The vehicle must be on level ground and at a complete standstill during sensor calibration. Any vehicle movement results in a failed calibration.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the IMU Calibration routine. Follow the diagnostic scan tool directions.

    Does the scan tool routine pass? 

    Yes  GO to  S7
    No  For all others, GO to  S8.
  8. S7 RECHECK THE ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM) MODULE DTC (DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE) S

    • Clear the ABSDTC's.

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Test drive the vehicle above 20 km/h (12 mph) and make at least 1 left turn and 1 right turn.

    • Carry out the ABS self-test.

    Are any of the DTC's listed in the DTC Fault Trigger Conditions table present in the ABS module? 

    Yes  For all others, GO to  S8.
    No  The condition causing the concern is no longer present. The concern was most likely caused by an incomplete calibration or a previously failed calibration of the stability control sensors.
  9. S8 CHECK THE PRIVATE HS-CAN (HIGH-SPEED CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

    WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Wait one minute.

    • Disconnect RCM _A connector C310A..

    • Disconnect RCM _B connector C310B..

    • Disconnect ABS Module connector C135..

    • For ABS Module Connector C135:

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes  REPAIR the circuit.
    No  GO to  S9
  10. S9 CHECK THE PRIVATE HS-CAN (HIGH-SPEED CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.

    • For ABS Module Connector C135:

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Are the resistances greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  S10
    No  REPAIR the circuit in question.
  11. S10 CHECK THE PRIVATE HS-CAN (HIGH-SPEED CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER

    • For ABS Module Connector C135:

    • Measure:

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  S11
    No  REPAIR the circuits.
  12. S11 CHECK THE PRIVATE HS-CAN (HIGH-SPEED CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK) CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

    • For ABS Module Connector C135:

    • Measure:

    • For ABS Module Connector C135:

    • Measure:

    Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  S12
    No  REPAIR the circuit in question.
  13. S12 VERIFY ALL WIRING CONNECTIONS

    • Using a good light source, inspect all disconnected electrical connectors for the following:

      • Corrosion - install new connector or terminal and clean the module pins.
      • Damaged or bent pins - install new terminals or pins.
      • Pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary.
      • Spread terminals - install new terminals as necessary.

    Are the connectors free of corrosion, damaged pins, bent pins, pushed-out pins and spread terminals? 

    Yes  For all others, GO to  S13.
    No  REPAIR the affected connectors or terminals. REFER to OEM CONNECTOR REPAIR PROCEDURES for schematic and connector information.
  14. S13 CHECK THE RCM (RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE) FOR CORRECT OPERATION

    • Connect ABS Module connector sure the connector seats and latches correctly..

    • Connect RCM _A connector sure the connector seats and latches correctly..

    • Connect RCM _B connector sure the connector seats and latches correctly..

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new RCM. Check OASIS for any service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new RCM REFER to: Restraints Control Module (RCM)
    . ORDER a replacement RCM and INCLUDE the RVC on the form. If this is a Ford paid repair, INCLUDE the RVC on the warranty claim form.
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
