Pinpoint Test I: Brake Fluid Level Faults

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

The brake fluid level switch is hardwired to the ABS module, the module monitors the switch and brake fluid level. If a circuit fault or fluid loss is detected, a DTC is set.

DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

DTC	Description	Fault Trigger Condition
ABS C0049:01	Brake Fluid Level: General Electrical Failure	Sets when the ABS module detects a short to ground, voltage or an open circuit in the brake fluid level switch or circuits.
ABS C0049:7A	Brake Fluid Level: Fluid Leak Or Seal Failure	Sets when the ABS module determines a leak is present in the hydraulic system.
ABS C0049:7B	Brake Fluid Level: Low Fluid Level	Sets when the ABS module determines the fluid level in the hydraulic system is low.

Possible Sources

Wiring, terminals or connectors
Leak in the hydraulic system
Brake fluid level switch
EBB unit

I1 CHECK THE ABS MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

Ignition ON.

Using a diagnostic scan tool, retrieve all ABS module Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

Note all ABS module Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

Is DTC C0049:7A present in the ABS module?

Yes

GO to I2

No	For DTC C0049:01 or C0049:7B, REFER to: Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes For all other ABS module Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), GO to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart .

I2 INSPECT THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM FOR LEAKS
- Thoroughly inspect the brake system hoses, tubes, joint connections, brake caliper and EBB unit for any signs of an obvious leak.
Are there any obvious signs of a brake fluid leak?

Yes REPAIR the leak or INSTALL a new component as necessary.

No BLEED the brake system. REFER to: Brake System Pressure Bleeding .
