Front Subframe: Removal

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. NOTE: Disconnect the battery ground cable anytime the steering gear is being serviced or damage to the steering gear internal power relay may occur resulting in steering gear replacement.

    Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .

  3. Steering wheel in straight ahead position.

  4. WARNING: Do not reuse steering column shaft bolts. This may result in fastener failure and steering column shaft detachment or loss of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

    Separate the steering column shaft from the steering gear.

    1. Remove and discard the steering shaft coupler retainer.

      Torque: 46 lb.ft (63 Nm)

    2. Separate the steering column shaft from the steering gear.

  5. Remove the pushpins, screws and the front underbody shield.

    Torque: 1: 18 lb.in (2 Nm)

  6. Remove the fender splash shield. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .
  7. Remove the radiator. Refer to: Radiator .
  8. NOTE: Do not use power tools to remove the stabilizer bar link nut. Damage to the stabilizer bar link ball joint or boot may occur.
    NOTE: The stabilizer bar links are designed with low friction ball joints that have a low breakaway torque.
    NOTE: Use the TORX PLUS® holding feature to prevent the ball stud from turning while removing or installing the lower arm outboard nut. Torx® and TORX PLUS® is a reg. tm of Acument Intellectual Properties, LLC.

    On both sides. Remove and discard the stabilizer bar link lower nut and position aside the stabilizer bar link.

    Torque: 85 lb.ft (115 Nm)

  9. NOTE: Do not use a hammer to separate the outer tie-rod end from the wheel knuckle or damage to the wheel knuckle may result.
    NOTE: Use care when installing the tie rod separator or damage to the outer tie-rod end boot may occur.
    NOTE: Use the hex-holding feature to prevent the stud from turning while removing the nut.

    On both sides. Remove and discard the tie rod end nut and separate the tie rod end from the wheel knuckle. Use the General Equipment: Tie Rod End Remover

    Torque: 111 lb.ft (150 Nm)

  10. NOTE: Do not use a prying device to open the slot in the knuckle to separate the lower ball joint from the knuckle assembly. Damage to the knuckle assembly may occur.
    NOTE: Do not use a prying device or separator fork between the ball joint and the wheel knuckle. Damage to the ball joint or ball joint seal may result. Only use the pry bar by inserting it into the lower arm body opening.
    NOTE: Use care when releasing the lower arm and wheel knuckle into the resting position or damage to the ball joint seal may occur.

    On both sides. Remove and discard the ball joint pinch bolt and nut and separate the ball joint from the wheel knuckle.

    Torque: 76 lb.ft (103 Nm)

  11. Disconnect and position aside the pedestrian alert system speaker electrical connector.

  12. Remove the nuts and the pedestrian alert system speaker.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

    1. Remove the nuts.

      Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

    2. Using zip ties or mechanics wire support the LH coolant pump.

    1. Detach the wiring retainer.
    2. Remove the nuts.

      Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

    3. Using zip ties or mechanics wire support the coolant diverter valve.

    1. Remove the nuts.

      Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

    2. Using zip ties or mechanics wire support the RH coolant pump.

  13. Unclip the wiring harness retainer and hose retainers.

    Vehicles with 

  14. Remove the roll restrictor bolt.

    Torque: 76 lb.ft (103 Nm)

    All vehicles 

  15. Position a powertrain jack under the front subframe. Use the General Equipment: Powertrain JackUse the General Equipment: Wooden Block

  16. On both sides Index-mark the location of the subframe to the body for reference during installation.

  19. On both sides

    1. Remove and discard the rearward subframe bolts.

      Torque: Stage 1: 159 lb.ft (215 Nm) Stage 2: 120 deg.

    2. Remove the bolts and the subframe bracket.

      Torque: 66 lb.ft (90 Nm)

  20. On both sides

    1. Remove and discard the front subframe bolt.

      Torque: 85 lb.ft (115 Nm)

    2. Remove and discard the subframe bolt.

      Torque: Stage 1: 159 lb.ft (215 Nm) Stage 2: 120 deg.

  21. NOTE: Make sure that no components catch.

    Lower the front subframe. Use the General Equipment: Powertrain JackUse the General Equipment: Wooden Block
