Pinpoint Test A: Paddle Shifters Are Inoperative Or Do Not Operate Properly
- NOTE: If TR sensor Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are present in the TCM, the Paddle Shift feature may not be operational.
Refer to Transmission Controls for schematic and connector information.
Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
The paddle shift switches are mounted to the steering wheel. When the sport shift (M) button is selected, the paddle shift feature becomes activated and allows the operator to upshift and downshift without removing their hands from the steering wheel.
DTC Fault Trigger Conditions
DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition TCM P0815:00 Upshift Switch Circuit: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates a fault in the upshift switch circuit. TCM P0816:00 Downshift Switch Circuit: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates a fault in the downshift switch circuit. TCM P2777:00 Upshift Switch Circuit High: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates a short to power in the upshift circuit. TCM P2781:00 Downshift Switch Circuit High: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates a short to power in the downshift circuit. Possible Sources
- Connectors damaged or pushed-out terminals, circuitry open, shorted to power or shorted to ground
- Upshift paddle switch
- Downshift paddle switch
- Clockspring
- SCCM
- TCM
- A1
- Road test the vehicle and press the rotary gear shift (M) button. Use the paddle shifters to upshift and downshift the transmission.
Do the paddle shifters work properly?
Yes The paddle shifters are working properly at this time. INSPECT harness connectors for loose terminals or corrosion. No If the upshift paddle switch is inoperative, GO to A2 If the downshift paddle switch is inoperative, GO to A8 If both paddle switches are inoperative, GO to A14 - A2 CHECK THE UPSHIFT PADDLE SWITCH
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect Upper Clockspring C218B.
- Measure the following while pressing and releasing the upshift paddle switch:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C218B-12 C218B-13
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms with the upshift switch pressed and greater than 10, 000 ohms when released?
Yes GO to A4 No GO to A3 - A3 CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL WIRING HARNESS UPSHIFT CIRCUITS
- Disconnect Upshift paddle switch C2428.
Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?
Yes INSTALL a new upshift paddle switch. REFER to: Upshift Paddle Switch . No INSTALL a new steering wheel multifunction switch wiring harness. REFER to: Steering Wheel Multifunction Switch . - A4 CHECK THE UPSHIFT SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Connect Upper Clockspring C218B.
- Disconnect Upshift paddle switch C2428.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C2428-1 Ground
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes GO to A5 No GO to A6 - A5 CHECK THE PADDLE SHIFT GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes INSTALL a new upshift paddle switch. REFER to: Upshift Paddle Switch . No GO to A14 - A6 CHECK THE UPSHIFT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect TCM C455B.
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to A7 No REFER to OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to diagnose the open circuit. REPAIR the circuit or INSTALL new components as necessary. - A7 CHECK THE UPSHIFT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C2428-1 Ground
Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
Yes INSTALL a new TCM. REFER to: Transmission Control Module (TCM) . No REFER to OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to diagnose the short to ground. REPAIR the circuit or INSTALL new components as necessary. - Measure:
- A8 CHECK THE DOWNSHIFT PADDLE SWITCH
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect Upper Clockspring C218B.
- Measure the following while pressing and releasing the downshift paddle switch:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C218B-5 C218B-13
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms with the downshift switch pressed and greater than 10, 000 ohms when released?
Yes GO to A10 No GO to A9 - A9 CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL WIRING HARNESS DOWNSHIFT CIRCUITS
- Disconnect Downshift paddle switch C2429.
Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?
Yes INSTALL a new downshift paddle switch. REFER to: Downshift Paddle Switch . No INSTALL a new steering wheel multifunction switch wiring harness. REFER to: Steering Wheel Multifunction Switch . - A10 CHECK THE DOWNSHIFT SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Connect Upper Clockspring C218B.
- Disconnect Downshift paddle switch C2429.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C2429-4 Ground
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes GO to A11 No GO to A12 - A11 CHECK THE PADDLE SHIFT GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes INSTALL a new downshift paddle switch. REFER to: Downshift Paddle Switch . No GO to A14 - A12 CHECK THE DOWNSHIFT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect TCM C455B.
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to A13 No REFER to OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to diagnose the open circuit. REPAIR the circuit or INSTALL new components as necessary. - A13 CHECK THE DOWNSHIFT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C2429-4 Ground
Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
Yes INSTALL a new TCM. REFER to: Transmission Control Module (TCM) . No REFER to OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to diagnose the short to ground. REPAIR the circuit or INSTALL new components as necessary. - Measure:
- A14 CHECK THE VEHICLE HARNESS PADDLE SHIFT GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect SCCM C226A.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C226A-11 Ground
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to A15 No REPAIR the circuit. - A15 CHECK THE PADDLE SHIFT GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Connect SCCM C226A.
- Disconnect Upshift paddle switch C2428 (if not already disconnected).
- Disconnect Downshift paddle switch C2429 (if not already disconnected).
Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to A16 No REFER to OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to diagnose the open circuit. REPAIR the circuit or INSTALL new components as necessary. - A16 CHECK FOR CORRECT PADDLE SHIFT OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect and inspect TCM C4555B and all paddle shift related connectors.
- Using a good light source, inspect all
disconnected electrical connectors for the following:
- corrosion - install new connector or terminal and clean the module pins
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals or pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
- spread terminals - install new terminals as necessary
- Inspect all related wiring harnesses for damage or chafing that could cause an intermittent short or open circuit.
- Reconnect TCM C4555B and all paddle shift related connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB (general service bulletin), SSM (special service message) or FSA (Field Service Action). If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new TCM. REFER to: Transmission Control Module (TCM) . No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
