Pinpoint Test D : Paddle Shifters Are Inoperative Or Do Not Operate Properly
- Refer to Wiring Diagrams Cell 30 for schematic and connector information.
Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
The paddle shift switch is integral to the steering wheel. When the sport shift (S) position is selected, the upshift/downshift feature becomes activated and allows the operator to upshift or downshift without removing their hands from the steering wheel. If a new switch is required install a new paddle shift switch assembly.
Possible Sources
- Circuitry open/shorted
- Paddle shift switch
- PCM
- D1 TEST THE UPSHIFT AND DOWNSHIFT PADDLE SHIFTERS
- Road test the vehicle, with the selector lever in the S position and using the paddle shifters, check the upshift and downshift features for correct operation.
Do both the upshift paddle shifter and down shift paddle shifter work correctly?
Yes The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose connector. No If the upshift switch is inoperative, GO to D2 If the downshift switch is inoperative, GO to D7 If both switches are inoperative, GO to D12 - D2 CHECK THE UPSHIFT SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed-out terminals.
- Disconnect Upper Clockspring C218B.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C218B-4 Ground
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes GO to D5 No GO to D3 - D3 CHECK THE UPSHIFT SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect PCM For the 1.5L C1551B.
- Disconnect PCM For the 2.0L C1381B.
- Disconnect PCM For the 2.5L C175B.
- Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed-out terminals.
- Measure:
For vehicles equipped with the 1.5L
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C218B-4 C1551B-68 For vehicles equipped with the 2.0L
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C218B-4 C1381B-89 For vehicles equipped with the 2.5L

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to D4 No REPAIR the circuit. - D4 CHECK THE UPSHIFT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C218B-4 Ground
Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
Yes GO to D5 No REPAIR the circuit. - Measure:
- D5 CHECK THE SIGNAL RETURN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Connect PCM C175B.
- Ignition ON.
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes GO to D6 No GO to D10 - D6 CHECK THE PADDLE SHIFT SWITCH
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead Paddle switch harness side, pin 4. Paddle switch harness side, pin 5.
Is the resistance less than 1.5 ohms with upshift selected and greater than 10, 000 ohms when released?
Yes CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSB. If a TSB exists for this concern, discontinue this test and follow the TSB instructions. If no TSB address this concern, Refer to PCM Guided Routine . No INSTALL a new upshift paddle switch. REFER to: Upshift Paddle Switch . - Measure:
- D7 CHECK THE DOWNSHIFT CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed-out terminals.
- Disconnect Upper Clockspring C218B.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C218B-5 Ground
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes GO to D13 No GO to D8 - D8 CHECK THE DOWNSHIFT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect PCM Connector as equipped below.
- Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed-out terminals.
- Measure:
For vehicles equipped with the 1.5L

Yes GO to D9 No GO to D10 - D9 CHECK THE DOWNSHIFT SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
Yes GO to D14 No REPAIR the circuit. If an open circuit is not found, Refer to PCM Guided Routine . PERFORM the Transmission Strategy Download procedure. REFER to: Transmission Strategy Download . - Measure:
- D10 CHECK THE PADDLE SHIFTER CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE SASM AND PCM FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect SASM C226B If not already disconnected.
- For the upshift circuit measure:
For vehicles equipped with the 1.5L

Yes GO to D11 No REPAIR the circuit. - D11 CHECK THE SASM FOR AN OPEN

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes INSTALL a new clockspring. REFER to: Clockspring . No INSTALL a new SASM. REFER to: Steering Angle Sensor Module (SASM) . - Measure at the SASM:
- D12 CHECK THE SIGNAL RETURN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Connect PCM C175B.
- Ignition ON.
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes INSTALL a new paddle downshift switch. REFER to: Downshift Paddle Switch . No REPAIR the circuit. If an open circuit is not found, Refer to PCM Guided Routine . - D13 CHECK THE SASM FOR AN OPEN
- Connect SASM C226A.
- Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes INSTALL a new clockspring. REFER to: Clockspring . . No INSTALL a new SASM. REFER to: Steering Angle Sensor Module (SASM) . - D14 CHECK THE PADDLE SHIFT DOWNSHIFT SWITCH

Is the resistance less than 1.5 ohms with downshift selected and greater than 10, 000 ohms when released?
