High-Pressure Fuel Pump: Removal
NOTE:
Do not loosen any fittings or plugs on the high-pressure fuel pump.
- Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
- Disconnect the negative and positive battery cables. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
- If equipped with strut tower cross brace, detach the wiring harness retainer and position the positive battery cable aside.
-
- If equipped, remove the nuts and the strut tower cross brace.
- Discard the nuts.
- Remove the engine appearance cover retaining nuts and then remove the engine appearance cover.
- Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump electrical connector.
-
NOTE: When removing or installing the high-pressure fuel pump noise insulator, spreading the openings will reduce the risk of damage.
Remove the high-pressure fuel pump noise insulator.
- Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump fuel supply hose. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling
.
- Disconnect the HO2S electrical connector retainer from the high-pressure fuel pump bracket.
- Remove the high-pressure fuel pump drive unit noise insulator retainer, remove the brake vacuum pump noise insulator retainer and remove the wire harness retainer. Remove the high-pressure fuel pump drive unit noise insulator and remove the brake vacuum pump noise insulator.
-
NOTE: To release the fuel pressure in the high-pressure fuel tube, wrap the high-pressure fuel pump flare nut with a shop towel to absorb any residual fuel pressure during the loosening of high-pressure fuel pump flare nut.
- Remove the high-pressure fuel tube nut.
- Remove the high-pressure fuel tube bolt.
- Disconnect the high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts.
- Remove and discard the high-pressure fuel tube.
- Remove the high-pressure fuel pump bracket bolts and then remove the high-pressure fuel pump bracket.
-
NOTE: Alternately loosen the high-pressure fuel pump bolts one complete revolution at a time.
Remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump bolts and then remove the high-pressure fuel pump.
- Remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump O-ring seal.
- Remove the high-pressure fuel pump drive tappet.
- Inspect the high-pressure fuel pump tappet. If any flat spots or scoring are found, especially in the indicated areas, then inspect the high-pressure fuel pump and the high-pressure fuel pump tappet drive lobe. Install new components as necessary.
