High-Pressure Fuel Pump: Removal

NOTE: Do not loosen any fittings or plugs on the high-pressure fuel pump.
  1. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  2. Disconnect the negative and positive battery cables. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  3. If equipped with strut tower cross brace, detach the wiring harness retainer and position the positive battery cable aside.

    • If equipped, remove the nuts and the strut tower cross brace.

    • Discard the nuts.

  4. Remove the engine appearance cover retaining nuts and then remove the engine appearance cover.

  5. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump electrical connector.

  6. NOTE: When removing or installing the high-pressure fuel pump noise insulator, spreading the openings will reduce the risk of damage.

    Remove the high-pressure fuel pump noise insulator.

  7. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump fuel supply hose. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

  8. Disconnect the HO2S electrical connector retainer from the high-pressure fuel pump bracket.

  9. Remove the high-pressure fuel pump drive unit noise insulator retainer, remove the brake vacuum pump noise insulator retainer and remove the wire harness retainer. Remove the high-pressure fuel pump drive unit noise insulator and remove the brake vacuum pump noise insulator.

  10. NOTE: To release the fuel pressure in the high-pressure fuel tube, wrap the high-pressure fuel pump flare nut with a shop towel to absorb any residual fuel pressure during the loosening of high-pressure fuel pump flare nut.

    1. Remove the high-pressure fuel tube nut.
    2. Remove the high-pressure fuel tube bolt.
    3. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts.
    4. Remove and discard the high-pressure fuel tube.

  11. Remove the high-pressure fuel pump bracket bolts and then remove the high-pressure fuel pump bracket.

  12. NOTE: Alternately loosen the high-pressure fuel pump bolts one complete revolution at a time.

    Remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump bolts and then remove the high-pressure fuel pump.

  13. Remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump O-ring seal.

  14. Remove the high-pressure fuel pump drive tappet.

  15. Inspect the high-pressure fuel pump tappet. If any flat spots or scoring are found, especially in the indicated areas, then inspect the high-pressure fuel pump and the high-pressure fuel pump tappet drive lobe. Install new components as necessary.
