Pinpoint Test

  1. CHECK THE Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Transmission Range (TR) Parameter Identification (PID) STATES
    1. Ignition ON.
    2. Using a scan tool, view Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Parameter Identification (PID) TR.
    3. Operate the transmission gear selector in all positions while monitoring the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Parameter Identification (PID) TR states.
      • Do the Parameter Identification (PID) states agree with the selected positions? 
      1. Yes:  GO to 2  on page 4.
      2. No:  To diagnose a transmission gear selector (PRNDL) status concern, REFER to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - 6F50 AND 6F55 .
  2. CHECK THE Driver Seat Module (DSM) IGNITION SWITCH STATUS (IGN_SW) Parameter Identification (PID) STATES
    1. Using a scan tool, view Driver Seat Module (DSM) Parameter Identification (PID) IGN_SW.
    2. Cycle the ignition in all positions while monitoring the Driver Seat Module (DSM) IGN_SW Parameter Identification (PID) states.
      • Do the Parameter Identification (PID) states agree with the selected positions? 
      1. Yes:  GO to 3  on page 4.
      2. No:  For vehicles equipped with an ignition lock cylinder and key, REFER to INSTRUMENTATION, MESSAGE CENTER, AND WARNING CHIMES . For vehicles equipped with passive entry/passive start, REFER to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES .
  3. RETRIEVE Driver Seat Module (DSM) Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
    1. Operate the memory seat and memory mirrors in all directions through the full range of travel.
    2. Place the memory seat and memory mirrors in central travel positions.
    3. Using a scan tool, perform Driver Seat Module (DSM) self-test.
      • Are any Driver Seat Module (DSM) Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) retrieved? 
      1. Yes:  If Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) B1663, B1664, B1665 and B1666 are all retrieved, GO to 12  on page 10.

        If Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1663, GO to 22  on page 20.

        If Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1664, GO to 25  on page 23.

        If Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1665, GO to 28  on page 26.

        If Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1666, GO to 31  on page 29.

        If only Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1703, B1707, B1711, B1715, B1719, B1723, B1727 or B1731 are retrieved, GO to 5  on page 5.

        For any other Driver Seat Module (DSM) Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), REFER to DTC CHART: DRIVER SEAT MODULE (DSM) .

      2. No:  GO to 4  on page 5.
  4. MONITOR THE Driver Seat Module (DSM) Parameter Identifications (PIDs) AND CHECK FOR CORRECT MEMORY SEAT SWITCH INPUTS
    1. Using a scan tool, view Driver Seat Module (DSM) Parameter Identifications (PIDs).
      • Driver Power Seat Front Up/Down Switch (SFNT_SW)
      • Driver Power Seat Forward/Backward Switch (SFWD_SW)
      • Driver Power Seat Recline Switch Status (SRCL_SW)
      • Driver Power Seat Rear Up/Down Switch (SREARSW)
    2. Monitor Driver Seat Module (DSM) seat switch Parameter Identifications (PIDs) while activating the seat switch in all positions.
      • Do the Parameter Identification (PID) states agree with the switch positions? 
      1. Yes:  GO to 11  on page 10.
      2. No:  GO to 5  on page 5.
  5. CHECK THE SEAT CONTROL SWITCH
      WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: Driver Seat Side Air Bag C3051.
    3. Disconnect: Seat Control Switch C369.
    4. Carry out the seat control switch component test. Refer to SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS for component testing.
      • Did the seat control switch pass the seat control switch component test? 
      1. Yes:  GO to 6  on page 5.
      2. No:  INSTALL a new seat control switch. REFER to SEAT CONTROL SWITCH . CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
  6. CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE SEAT CONTROL SWITCH
    1. Measure:

      • Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 
      1. Yes:  GO to 7  on page 6.
      2. No:  VERIFY Body Control Module (BCM) fuse 19 (20A) is OK, If OK, REPAIR the circuit. If not OK, REFER to the SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS to identify possible causes of the circuit short. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
  7. CHECK THE SEAT CONTROL SWITCH GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
    1. Measure:

      • Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 
      1. Yes:  GO to 8  on page 6.
      2. No:  REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
  8. CHECK SEAT CONTROL SWITCH TO Driver Seat Module (DSM) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
    1. Disconnect: Driver Seat Module (DSM) C341B.
    2. Ignition ON.
    3. Measure:

      • Is any voltage present? 
      1. Yes:  REPAIR the affected circuit. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
      2. No:  GO to 9  on page 8.
  9. CHECK SEAT CONTROL SWITCH TO Driver Seat Module (DSM) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Measure:

      • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
      1. Yes:  GO to 10  on page 9.
      2. No:  REPAIR the affected circuit. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
  10. CHECK THE SEAT CONTROL SWITCH TO Driver Seat Module (DSM) CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN
    1. Disconnect: Driver Seat Module (DSM) C341B.
    2. Measure:

      • Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 
      1. Yes:  GO to 34  on page 32.
      2. No:  REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
  11. CHECK THE Driver Seat Module (DSM) FOR CORRECT OUTPUTS USING A SCAN TOOL AND Driver Seat Module (DSM) ACTIVE COMMANDS
    1. Using a scan tool, view Driver Seat Module (DSM) Parameter Identifications (PIDs).
      • Front Motor Up (FRONT_UP)
      • Front Motor Down (FRONT_DWN)
      • Rear Motor Up (REAR_UP)
      • Rear Motor Down (REAR_DWN)
      • Horizontal Motor Forward (HORZ_FWD)
      • Horizontal Motor Backward (HORZ_BWD)
      • Recline Motor Forward (RECL_FWD)
      • Recline Motor Backward (RECL_BWD)
    2. Toggle the Driver Seat Module (DSM) active commands ON and OFF while monitoring the seat movement.
      • Does the driver seat operate correctly? 
      1. Yes:  GO to 34  on page 32.
      2. No:  If no seat movement, GO to 12  on page 10.

        If no front vertical seat movement, GO to 22  on page 20.

        If no rear vertical seat movement, GO to 25  on page 23.

        If no horizontal seat movement, GO to 28  on page 26.

        If no recline seat movement, GO to 31  on page 29.

  12. CHECK VOLTAGE SUPPLY TO THE Driver Seat Module (DSM)
      WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: Driver Seat Side Air Bag C3051.
    3. Disconnect: Driver Seat Module (DSM) C341A.
    4. Measure:

      • Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 
      1. Yes:  GO to 13  on page 11.
      2. No:  VERIFY Battery Junction Box (BJB) fuse 23 (30A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. If not OK, REFER to the SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS to identify possible causes of the circuit short. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
  13. CHECK THE Driver Seat Module (DSM) GROUND CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN
    1. Disconnect: Driver Seat Module (DSM) C341B.
    2. Measure:

      • Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 
      1. Yes:  GO to 14  on page 12.
      2. No:  REPAIR the affected circuit. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
  14. CHECK SEAT FRONT HEIGHT MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    1. Measure:

      • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
      1. Yes:  GO to 16  on page 14.
      2. No:  GO to 15  on page 13.
  15. CHECK SEAT FRONT HEIGHT MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE MOTOR DISCONNECTED
    1. Disconnect: Driver Seat Front Height Motor C382.
    2. Measure:

      • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
      1. Yes:  INSTALL a new seat track assembly. REFER to SEAT TRACK . CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
      2. No:  REPAIR the affected circuit. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
  16. CHECK THE SEAT REAR HEIGHT MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    1. Measure:

      • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
      1. Yes:  GO to 18  on page 16.
      2. No:  GO to 17  on page 15.
  17. CHECK THE SEAT REAR HEIGHT MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE MOTOR DISCONNECTED
    1. Disconnect: Driver Seat Rear Height Motor C363.
    2. Measure:

      • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
      1. Yes:  INSTALL a new seat track assembly. REFER to SEAT TRACK . CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
      2. No:  REPAIR the affected circuit. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
  18. CHECK THE SEAT HORIZONTAL MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    1. Measure:

      • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
      1. Yes:  GO to 20  on page 18.
      2. No:  GO to 19  on page 17.
  19. CHECK THE SEAT HORIZONTAL MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE MOTOR DISCONNECTED
    1. Disconnect: Driver Seat Horizontal Motor C362.
    2. Measure:

      • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
      1. Yes:  INSTALL a new seat track assembly. REFER to SEAT TRACK . CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
      2. No:  REPAIR the affected circuit. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
  20. CHECK THE DRIVER POWER SEAT RECLINER MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    1. Measure:

      • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
      1. Yes:  GO to 34  on page 32.
      2. No:  GO to 21  on page 19.
  21. CHECK THE DRIVER SEAT RECLINER MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE MOTOR DISCONNECTED
    1. Disconnect: Driver Seat Recliner Motor C3187.
    2. Measure:

      • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
      1. Yes:  INSTALL a new seat recliner motor. REFER to SEAT RECLINER MOTOR . CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
      2. No:  REPAIR the affected circuit. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
  22. CHECK THE SEAT FRONT HEIGHT MOTOR FOR CORRECT OPERATION
      WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: Driver Seat Side Air Bag C3051.
    3. Disconnect: Front Height Power Seat Motor C382.
    4. Ignition ON.
    5. Using a scan tool, view Driver Seat Module (DSM) Parameter Identifications (PIDs).
      • Front Motor Up (FRONT_UP)
      • Front Motor Down (FRONT_DWN)
    6. NOTE: During the following step, the voltage being measured changes polarity dependent upon which direction the seat control switch is activated.

    7. While toggling Driver Seat Module (DSM) active commands front motor up and front motor down, on and off, measure:
      • Is the voltage greater than 11 volts when the seat control switch is operated and 0 volt in the rest position? 
      1. Yes:  INSTALL a new seat track assembly. REFER to SEAT TRACK . CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
      2. No:  GO to 23  on page 21.
  23. CHECK THE SEAT FRONT HEIGHT MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: Driver Seat Module (DSM) C341B.
    3. Ignition ON.
    4. Measure:

      • Is any voltage present on either circuit? 
      1. Yes:  REPAIR the affected circuit. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
      2. No:  GO to 24  on page 22.
  24. CHECK THE SEAT FRONT HEIGHT MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Measure:

      • Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 
      1. Yes:  GO to 34  on page 32.
      2. No:  REPAIR the affected circuit. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
  25. CHECK THE SEAT REAR HEIGHT MOTOR FOR CORRECT OPERATION
      WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: Driver Seat Side Air Bag C3051.
    3. Disconnect: Driver Seat Rear Height Motor C363.
    4. Ignition ON.
    5. Using a scan tool, view Driver Seat Module (DSM) Parameter Identifications (PIDs).
      • Rear Motor Up (REAR_UP)
      • Rear Motor Down (REAR_DWN)
    6. While toggling Driver Seat Module (DSM) active commands rear motor up and rear motor down, on and off, measure:

      • Is the voltage greater than 11 volts when commanded on in both directions and no voltage present when commanded off? 
      1. Yes:  INSTALL a new seat track assembly. REFER to SEAT TRACK . CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
      2. No:  GO to 26  on page 24.
  26. CHECK THE REAR HEIGHT MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: Driver Seat Module (DSM) C341B.
    3. Ignition ON.
    4. Measure:

      • Is any voltage present on either circuit? 
      1. Yes:  REPAIR the affected circuit. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
      2. No:  GO to 27  on page 25.
  27. CHECK THE REAR HEIGHT MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Measure:

      • Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 
      1. Yes:  GO to 34  on page 32.
      2. No:  REPAIR the affected circuit. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
  28. CHECK THE HORIZONTAL MOTOR FOR CORRECT OPERATION
      WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: Driver Seat Side Air Bag C3051.
    3. Disconnect: Driver Seat Horizontal Motor C362.
    4. Ignition ON.
    5. Using a scan tool, view Driver Seat Module (DSM) Parameter Identifications (PIDs).
      • Horizontal Motor Forward (HORZ_FWD)
      • Horizontal Motor Backward (HORZ_BWD)
    6. NOTE: During the following step, the voltage being measured changes polarity dependent upon which direction the seat control switch is activated.

    7. While toggling Driver Seat Module (DSM) active commands horizontal motor forward and horizontal motor backward on and off, measure:
      • Is the voltage greater than 11 volts when the seat control switch is operated and 0 volt in the rest position? 
      1. Yes:  INSTALL a new seat track assembly. REFER to SEAT TRACK . CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
      2. No:  GO to 29  on page 27.
  29. CHECK THE HORIZONTAL MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
    1. Disconnect: Driver Seat Module (DSM) C341B.
    2. Ignition ON.
    3. Measure:

      • Is any voltage present on either circuit? 
      1. Yes:  REPAIR the affected circuit. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
      2. No:  GO to 30  on page 28.
  30. CHECK THE HORIZONTAL MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Measure:

      • Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 
      1. Yes:  GO to 34  on page 32.
      2. No:  REPAIR the affected circuit. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
  31. CHECK THE DRIVER SEAT RECLINER MOTOR FOR CORRECT OPERATION
      WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect: Driver Seat Side Air Bag C3051.
    3. Disconnect: Driver Seat Recliner Motor C3187.
    4. Ignition ON.
    5. Using a scan tool, view Driver Seat Module (DSM) Parameter Identifications (PIDs).
      • Recline Motor Forward (RECL_FWD)
      • Recline Motor Backward (RECL_BWD)
    6. While toggling Driver Seat Module (DSM) active commands recline motor forward and recline motor backward on and off, measure:

      • Is the voltage greater than 11 volts when command on in both directions and no voltage present when commanded off? 
      1. Yes:  INSTALL a new seat recliner motor. REFER to SEAT RECLINER MOTOR . CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
      2. No:  GO to 32  on page 30.
  32. CHECK THE DRIVER SEAT RECLINER MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
    1. Disconnect: Driver Seat Module (DSM) C341B.
    2. Measure:

      • Is any voltage present on either circuit? 
      1. Yes:  REPAIR the affected circuit. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
      2. No:  GO to 33  on page 31.
  33. CHECK THE DRIVER SEAT RECLINER MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Measure:

      • Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 
      1. Yes:  GO to 34  on page 32.
      2. No:  REPAIR the affected circuit. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). GO to 35  on page 32.
  34. CHECK FOR CORRECT Driver Seat Module (DSM) OPERATION
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect and inspect all Driver Seat Module (DSM) connectors.
    3. Repair:
      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins as necessary
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    4. Reconnect the Driver Seat Module (DSM) connectors and all previously disconnected rear window defrost system connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    5. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
      • Is the concern still present? 
      1. Yes:  CHECK On-Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) instructions. If no Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) address this concern, INSTALL a new Driver Seat Module (DSM). REFER to DRIVER SEAT MODULE (DSM) . GO to 35  on page 32.
      2. No:  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues. GO to 35  on page 32.
  35. CHECK FOR Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
      WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Connect: Driver Seat Side Air Bag C3051.
    3. Connect: All previously disconnected electrical connectors.
    4. Ignition ON.
    5. Using a scan tool, clear the Restraints Control Module (RCM) Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
    6. Cycle the ignition OFF then ON.
    7. Using a scan tool, perform Restraints Control Module (RCM) self-test.
      • Are any Restraints Control Module (RCM) Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) retrieved during self-test? 
      1. Yes:  REFER to DTC CHART: RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE (RCM) for pinpoint test direction.
      2. No:  The repair is complete. RETURN the vehicle to the customer.
