Engine Rear Cover: Installation

  1. Apply a bead of sealant at the back seam of the upper and lower crankcase.

  2. NOTE: Early build shown, late build similar.

  3. Apply a bead of sealant at the oil pump cover joint.
  4. Install the rear engine cover.
    • Install the press in place gasket.
    • Install the rear engine cover.
    • Install the bolts.

  5. Position back or install the turbocharger heat shield and bolts.

  6. If equipped with a heat shield bracket, install the heat shield bracket and bolts.

  7. If equipped with a heat shield bracket, connect the wiring retainer to the back of the heat shield bracket.

  8. If equipped with a heat shield bracket, position back the ground wire and install the retaining nuts.

  9. NOTE: The crankshaft rear oil seal and wear sleeve are installed as an assembly.
    NOTE: Lubricate the outer diameter of the rubber seal with a solution of dish soap and water (approximately 50/50) prior to assembly.
    Do not use any other type of lubricant.
    NOTE: Apply a bead of Threadlock 262 around the circumference of the outer rear edge of the secondary crankshaft flange.
    NOTE: The rear main seal and wear sleeve are correctly seated when the crankshaft begins to rotate.

  10. Using the special tool, install the crankshaft rear oil seal.
  11. Install the front flywheel adapter.

  12. Install the flexplate.
    • Install the new bolts.
    • Tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
    • Tighten to 94 Nm (69 lb-ft) in the sequence shown.

  13. Install the transmission. For additional information, refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - TORQSHIFT .
  14. Install the starter. For additional information, refer to STARTING SYSTEM - DIESEL ENGINE .
