Test B: Battery Will Not Stay Charged

  1. Check for parasitic draw. Perform PARASITIC DRAW TEST  under ON-VEHICLE TESTING. If draw is greater than 50 milliamps, determine source of draw and repair as necessary. If draw is 50 milliamps or less, go to next step.
  2. Check generator output. Perform GENERATOR LOAD TEST  and GENERATOR NO-LOAD TEST  under ON-VEHICLE TESTING. If generator is okay, go to next step. If generator is not okay, continue diagnosis of PCM controlled charging system. See TEST HY: GENERATOR/REGULATOR SYSTEM under SYSTEM TESTS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V - GASOLINE & NGV article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
    3. NOTE: Ensure battery is fully charged to perform this test.
  3. Verify condition of battery by using a battery analyzer. If battery is okay, go to next step. If battery is not okay, replace battery. Retest system operation.
  4. Check for parasitic draw from electronic modules. Perform ELECTRONIC MODULE PARASITIC DRAW TEST  under ON-VEHICLE TESTING. If electronic modules are okay, recharge battery and retest system operation. If electronic modules are not okay, replace appropriate module. Reconfigure as necessary. See MODULE CONFIGURATION in appropriate MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article.
